In high-throughput e-commerce and agentic commerce networks, automated backend systems and transaction processing engines are continuously exposed to severe zero-click exploits, webhook manipulation, and semantic data injection anomalies. Traditional application security models operate post-execution or rely on reactive signature matching, which introduces computational latency and risks system state exposure. As the founder of ETBV, I engineered ETB PayShield to change this paradigm—introducing a plug-and-play, zero-overhead, proactive defense gateway that neutralizes vulnerability classes at the absolute system boundary before internal memory stacks are exposed.

🛠️ How we built it

The complete infrastructure is engineered as a lightweight, highly optimized backend data pipeline designed to run seamlessly on restricted computing interfaces or local systems.

  • Layer-Zero Proxy Gate: Built using a custom, high-speed Python http.server implementation that validates telemetry structures, data shapes, and length headers completely out-of-band.
  • Orchestration Framework: Automated natively using Windows PowerShell scripting (start_etb_shield.ps1 and run_tests.ps1) to manage background task sessions, initialize environment variables safely bound to localhost, and recycle active process handles.
  • Threat Serialization Engine: Converts transaction log variables into structured, globally standardized STIX 2.1 threat objects.
  • AppSec AI Telemetry Layer: Features an autonomous script pipeline (ai_analyzer.py) that feeds the structured STIX bundles into an analytical AI language model to automatically synthesize a structured JSON Corporate Compliance Report detailing executive summaries, risk levels, and specific mitigation analysis.

🚧 Challenges we ran into

Our primary technical hurdle was ensuring that strict input boundary verification and real-time threat serialization introduced zero network latency to the transaction stream. We achieved this by implementing an entirely out-of-band asynchronous processing loop.

The Layer-Zero proxy drops malicious requests immediately with a 403 Forbidden intercept, but when valid payloads arrive, it instantly returns a 200 Verified status token to keep the transaction seamless while offloading data logging and AI analysis to background jobs. Managing isolated process scopes and variable replication entirely within Windows PowerShell background jobs also required meticulous structure to ensure environment variables persisted seamlessly during automated simulation cycles.

🏅 Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Zero Packet Drops: Successfully routed internet-facing telemetry payloads securely through our reverse proxy gateway listener on Port 8080, proving the engine parses incoming data shapes flawlessly without a single dropped packet.
  • Deterministic Isolation: Engineered a functioning Layer-Zero intercept that successfully drop-handles threats via a clean 403 Forbidden response at the boundary before any unparsed data strings can touch internal memory paths.
  • Low-Resource Portability: Maintained an ultra-low performance footprint, proving high-assurance security automation can run reliably within constrained system environments.

🧠 What we learned

This development sprint proved that pairing strict, deterministic software boundaries with generative artificial intelligence yields superior application security outcomes. Deterministic gates excel at the hard mathematics of isolating traffic, while AI language models thrive at interpreting telemetry logs. By feeding structured STIX 2.1 datasets to the AI model rather than raw unparsed data strings, the analytical layer yields highly precise, hallucination-free executive compliance intelligence.

🚀 What's next for ETB PayShield

The next phase for ETB PayShield focuses on scaling runtime integration options. We plan to expand the data pipeline to natively ingest and process live, multi-source STIX 2.1 threat streams. We are also building out a secondary visual dashboard chassis view to map real-time threat relationship graphs directly for enterprise SOC evaluation.
