Inspiration

We started out brainstorming about issues our communities face, and one issue we thought of is college students experiencing loneliness. We then had to think about how to solve the issue of loneliness. Our main goal was to allow the student the opportunity to interact with other people and prevent loneliness in the long term rather than just creating something that temporarily gets rid of their loneliness like a chatterbot.

What it does

eStudy allows students to create study groups anywhere on campus. Anyone can see the study groups, and anyone can join. This app puts all of the study groups happening on campus in one spot so that people can join, meet people, and study.

How we built it

We used MySQL to create the backend and Express for the server. React, HTML, and CSS were used as the front end. JavaScript was mainly used as middleware.

Challenges we ran into

Everyone on the team was unfamiliar database systems, so we had to learn all of the necessary languages from scratch. We also had trouble getting data from the back end and sending it to the front end.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of a lot of things we did in the project because we have had no previous experience in making any of the things we made during the hackathon. However, some notable example are the search bar because it looks really nice, and the server because we got it working.

What we learned

We learned how to use MySQL, React, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. We also learned how to create servers and connect the front end of a system to the back end. Overall, we learned how to develop an app.

What's next for eStudy

We currently display our study groups as a list. We would like to change it to an interactive map of campus, where the study groups could pop up on the buildings they are located in.
