Inspiration

Once upon a time, the beauty industry was exclusive and inaccessible to individuals with disabilities, including those with visual impairments. But we saw a different future – one where everyone, regardless of ability, could enjoy the confidence and joy that comes with a great makeup experience.

What it does

So, we interviewed five visually impaired individuals, and we spent countless hours scrolling through comments under makeup tutorials and articles to truly understand the pain points and struggles of those with visual impairments when it comes to makeup. What we found was truly eye-opening.

Visual-impaired individuals were relying on others for makeup feedback, struggling to differentiate between products and colors, and encountering difficulties when using new makeup products. They found it hard to identify how to use products to meet their needs, and pinpointing flaws that can't be felt by touch posed a challenge. It was also difficult for them to find makeup products that catered to their unique facial features and needs.

How we built it

We knew we had to do something to change this, so we set out to create an inclusive makeup app that would empower visually impaired individuals with a confident, convenient, and equitable makeup experience. We aimed to create an app that would benefit a wide range of people, from those with permanent visual impairments to those with temporary impairments or low vision.

As we designed and built the app, we kept the user experience at the forefront of our minds. We created four unique features tailored to address each pain point we had identified during our research:

Inclusive onboarding for seamless personalized makeup recommendations throughout the app Real-time feedback and rewards for makeup enthusiasts Smart Estee mirror virtual makeup buddy for voice-guided assistance Scan beauty products and activate digital beauty butler for differentiating between products and colors

Challenges we ran into

Despite our determination to create a makeup app that is truly inclusive, we faced a number of challenges during the development process. One of the biggest challenges we faced was finding and interviewing visually impaired individuals who could provide us with valuable insights about their beauty experiences. We left comments on various YouTube, TikTok, and blogger platforms, hoping to connect with visually impaired individuals who were willing to share their stories with us. However, due to the limited number of individuals who were willing and available to participate, it was a long and difficult process.

After weeks of persistence and determination, we are proud to have conducted 5 valuable interviews with individuals who have varying levels of visual impairment. These interviews have given us a profound insight into the unique challenges and pain points that visually impaired individuals experience in their beauty routines. Despite the difficulties we encountered in locating and reaching out to these individuals, we remained steadfast in our objective of developing a more inclusive beauty app.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Despite the challenges, we are incredibly proud of what we were able to accomplish with this app. We believe that it has the potential to revolutionize the beauty industry and make it more inclusive and accessible for all. We are particularly proud of the four unique features we developed to address the pain points of visually impaired individuals. We also feel that we were able to strike a good balance between form and function, creating an app that is both beautiful and highly functional.

What we learned

Throughout the development process, we learned a great deal about the challenges that visually impaired individuals face when it comes to applying makeup. We also gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of inclusive design and the impact it can have on people's lives. We also learned that there is still much work to be done in the beauty industry to make it more inclusive and accessible for all.

What's next for Estee

Looking forward, we plan to continue refining and improving the app based on user feedback. We also plan to expand our user base and reach even more people with our inclusive design. Ultimately, our goal is to empower everyone with a confident, convenient, and equitable beauty experience.
