Inspiration

My little cousin lives with cerebral palsy. Growing up, I watched her parents and other grown-ups put in their bit in providing her with support and care. As a little kid and even now, I found myself often wondering why our society in Nigeria had almost non-existent support for people living with disabilities. To be more specific, I watched my uncle and his wife switch Grace from school to school, doing their best trying to find institutions that could provide adequate learning, physical support, and care.

Several years later and not much has changed, the divide has broadened even more with further advancements in technology. How do we make sure people living with disabilities are able to experience everyday things in our world?

I am particularly passionate about the beauty industry as a whole and I know how "feeling beautiful" helps to lift one's spirit and energy. Not that make-up is necessary to make one feel beautiful, but people with disabilities should be able to do these things if they want to just as I do when I want to. They deserve the right to participate in the beauty industry. It is our duty to humanity to devote our efforts to making it possible.

What it does

My product is a beauty assistant that can help people with various kinds of needs. It has multiple features like providing skincare routines based on time and date, guiding people with visual impairment to apply their makeup, helping people with dementia store beauty tips and requesting them later, and helping them record the last location of their items. It is a one-stop solution for all your beauty needs, and it helps make life easier for all kinds of people.

How we built it

I built it using expo react native and firebase. I chose to use expo because mobile apps are much better when you want to build a lifestyle software product for people with neurological disabilities like Dementia and Alzheimer's. I did not want to burden them with trying to access a URL every day. An app was better suited as I could send notifications twice a day to remind them about their beauty needs.

Challenges we ran into

I ran into challenges integrating models as most of them do not have support for mobile development. I also ran into several issues with setting up my database because I was working with technologies I am completely new to.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I was able to integrate the database and get my application up and running successfully.

What we learned

I learned the role of passion when building for people with disabilities. It was emotional for me at some point. I also learned to persevere even when faced with challenges as I tried my best every time to find a way around technical difficulties experienced when working on my code.

What's next for Estee

I would love to pitch to Estee Lauder's executive, I love that Estee Lauder has products that support people and continues to encourage people to implement inclusive ideas. I would love to work with Estee Lauder in integrating my solution with their existing products. I would also go on to increase Estee's current capabilities make her better.
