Inspiration

COVID-19 has increased the number of unemployed people. This deeply concerns the Essentialize team because we personally know many people who suffer from this issue. Our site is the ultimate resource for the unemployed.

What it does

Our site provides resources on the current job market created by covid-19. We provide links to many websites with valuable information about the current crisis. Our most powerful feature is job search. Many job finding websites exist already, so we decided to use a different strategy. Our application web scrapes popular websites searching for available jobs. It used the device location to filter for only nearby jobs.

How I built it

We used node.js and expressjs for the server and bootstrap 4 for the front end. We web scraped with request-promise and cheerio.

Challenges I ran into

None of us had experience with web scraping, so we had to learn all the basics very quickly. Even though this inconvenience was a slight setback, in the end we all learned something by building this website.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

We are proud of the style and vibe of the front end of the website and very proud of the functionality. We are also very proud of accomplishing overcoming the things that we did not know. We found different, better, and more efficient ways to do things. In the end, we are most proud of making a finished product that can help real people in the world.

What I learned

We learned how to web scrape and we learned a lot of html tricks like gradients. Knowing these things can help us in the future to create more websites and help more people.

What's next for Essentialize

Our next step would be adding more educational resources for people to access. We could also scrape from more websites, even though we already use the most popular ones.
