Inspiration

The inspiration behind this project came from the need for a simple, low-cost system that can detect human movement in restricted or potentially unsafe areas and provide an immediate alert. We wanted to explore how an ESP32 and a basic motion sensor could be used to create a practical safety solution.

What it does

The ESP32-Based Emergency Motion Detection & Alert System detects human movement using a PIR sensor. When motion is detected, the ESP32 processes the signal and activates an LED and buzzer to provide a visual and audible alert.

The system can be useful for monitoring restricted or unsafe areas where quick detection and immediate notification are important.

How we built it

We built the prototype using an ESP32, PIR motion sensor, LED, buzzer, breadboard, jumper wires, and a potentiometer.

The PIR sensor continuously monitors the surrounding area. Its output is connected to the ESP32, which processes the sensor signal. When motion is detected, the ESP32 triggers the LED and buzzer.

We also created a simulation of the circuit to test and demonstrate the system's working before and alongside the physical prototype.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges was making sure the sensor, ESP32, LED, and buzzer worked correctly together. We also had to troubleshoot wiring, sensor responses, and the difference between the simulated and physical circuit.

Another challenge was designing a simple system that could demonstrate its purpose clearly while keeping the hardware compact and affordable.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully developed a working ESP32-based motion detection and alert prototype and demonstrated its functionality through both hardware and simulation.

We are particularly proud that a small number of low-cost components can be combined to create a system capable of providing an immediate visual and audible alert.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned how to interface a PIR sensor with an ESP32, process sensor input, and control output devices such as LEDs and buzzers.

We also gained practical experience in circuit connections, embedded programming, simulation, debugging, and converting a basic electronics concept into a working prototype.

What's next for ESP32-Based Emergency Motion Detection & Alert System

In the future, the system can be extended with IoT connectivity and remote monitoring. Notifications could be sent to a mobile device or monitoring dashboard when motion is detected.

Additional sensors could also be integrated to create a more comprehensive emergency monitoring system, while keeping the same low-cost and compact approach.
