Inspiration

In an era where environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations shape corporate reputations and investment strategies, our project explores the dynamic interplay between ESG scores and market performance metrics. Leveraging data from 100 top-performing companies, spanning 2017 to 2024, we analyze trends and correlations to answer pressing questions: Do higher ESG scores drive stronger market performance? Can sustainability and profitability coexist in a portfolio?

Through a visually engaging Tableau dashboard, we offer investors, analysts, and stakeholders actionable insights into how ESG metrics—often critiqued as 'woke investing'—translate into tangible market outcomes. Rooted in data and free from ideological bias, our project equips decision-makers with the tools to evaluate sustainability's real impact on financial success. This is not just about the future of investing—it's about how values and value converge today.

How we built it

We used historical ESG and market data, cleaned and merged datasets using Python, and designed interactive Tableau visualizations to showcase trends, correlations, and industry-specific insights.

Challenges we ran into

Limited availability of historical ESG data for some companies. Ensuring accurate and consistent data merging across multiple sources. Balancing dashboard interactivity with simplicity for end-users.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Successfully integrated ESG and market performance data into an intuitive dashboard. Identified meaningful insights, such as trends between ESG scores and market cap growth. Created a tool that aids data-driven decision-making for sustainable investments.

What we learned

ESG metrics vary significantly by industry and require nuanced analysis. Correlations between sustainability and market performance are complex but insightful. Effective data visualization is key to communicating insights clearly.

What's next for ESG & Market Cap Analysis

Expanding analysis to include more companies and global regions. Incorporating additional metrics, such as carbon intensity and shareholder returns. Exploring AI-powered predictive models for ESG-driven market trends.
