Inspiration
Inspired by the investments around the world and want to build a web platform introducing investments for beginners especially for ESG.
What it does
A web platform that introduces environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investments to beginners. Users invest in ESG-based stocks or funds with virtual funds to see their returns and learn about the economic and social impact of ESG. For example, it includes a dashboard that compares ESG scores and investment performance of a particular company.
How we built it
Bulding it through Python, and ESG data API
Challenges we ran into
The complexity of ESG data integration. Since ESG is a deeply developed programme, we tried to use MSCI ESG Data API or Bloomberg API to import ESG score and investment data in real time, but struggled with the limited accessibility and complexity of the data structure of the free API.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We have successfully developed a prototype that allows users to check their returns by investing virtual funds (e.g., W1 million) in ESG-based stocks, ETFs, and funds. For example, users can make investment decisions by comparing a particular company's ESG scores with past returns.
What we learned
We learnt the importance of ESG and its limitation. We have deeply understood the impact of ESG data on investment decisions and learned that the up-to-date and accurate data is essential to platform success.
What's next for ESG Investment Education Platform
We plan to work with schools, universities, or financial education nonprofits to integrate the platform into the regular curriculum, or partner with financial companies (e.g., Shinhan Bank and Hana Bank in Korea) to link them with real ESG investment products.
