Inspiration

Even in the closest families, there are hours every day when an older adult is alone — with a question, a memory, or simply the wish to talk to someone. That gap, more than any single missed call, is what motivated us to create EsencIA.

For adult children, that gap is a real worry — but between work, family, and daily responsibilities, being there every moment simply isn't possible. We wanted to build something that supports both sides: the older adult who needs connection, and the adult child who needs peace of mind.

Older adults are living longer, and rapidly changing technology can create unnecessary friction for people whose habits were formed before today's digital interfaces.

Families often find solutions that are clinical, impersonal, or require new apps, passwords, and learning curves. We believed the better approach was simple: older adults should not have to adapt to technology — technology should adapt to them.

What it does

EsencIA is a WhatsApp-native AI companion for adults 60+. Through voice notes, text, and images, it helps older adults stay connected, navigate everyday technology, remain mentally engaged, and preserve personal stories.

Its four core experiences are:

  • Daily Companionship: warm, respectful conversation with Olivia or Elías.

  • Everyday Technology Assistance: patient, step-by-step help from screenshots, photos, questions, or voice notes.

  • Active Mind: personalized stories, games, questions, and curiosity prompts.

  • Living Biography: meaningful moments organized into an evolving written family archive.

Families receive general activity summaries and account visibility while the older adult's private conversations remain protected.

How we built it

EsencIA was built as an AI-native platform powered by Gemini and Google Cloud, operating inside WhatsApp to eliminate adoption friction.

A Node.js/Express backend on Google Cloud Run receives messages, voice notes, and images and routes each interaction by complexity, modality, latency, and context.

  • Gemini 2.5 Flash handles fast conversation, multimodal interpretation, memory workflows, and weekly Living Biography generation.

  • Gemini 2.5 Pro handles real-time conversations requiring deeper reasoning and biographical synthesis.

Gemini interprets voice notes directly, eliminating a separate Speech-to-Text service. For limited current-information requests (weather, news, sports scores, and exchange rates), the router can invoke Gemini Google Search Grounding — never used for Biography or personal-memory conversations.

Firestore maintains profiles and conversational context, supported by Cloud Scheduler, Secret Manager, Cloud Logging, and Text-to-Speech. The system also includes proactive content, sponsor-support workflows, explicit older-adult consent, and predefined safety guidance with human follow-up.

Challenges we ran into

Our greatest challenge was making the AI useful, respectful, and safe without pretending to be human or replacing family relationships.

A second challenge was WhatsApp Business Platform integration. EsencIA's production number became available on August 11, only four business days before the August 17 submission deadline, leaving very little time for commercial onboarding and customer acquisition.

Meta verification and required template resubmission after a WABA change still constrain the experience. Users can initiate and use EsencIA in production, but proactive messaging remains unavailable while templates are pending, and the account remains in Meta's 250-user messaging tier.

We also refined Olivia and Elías so their language remained patient, natural, culturally relevant, and never childish or clinical.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We turned multimodal AI into an experience accessible through a tool many older adults already use.

Because EsencIA lives on the smartphone they already carry, companionship and practical support move with them beyond the home — unlike stationary home-based interfaces. The same WhatsApp experience can be used while visiting family, traveling, attending appointments, or going about everyday life.

We are especially proud of the Living Biography, which transforms everyday conversations into a written intergenerational archive.

EsencIA serves two users at once: greater independence and practical support for the older adult, and greater peace of mind and connection for the family sponsor.

It does this without positioning technology as a replacement for family, caregivers, doctors, or therapists.

AI handles conversation, memory, and routine delivery; founders oversee strategy, safety, partnerships, and exceptions. As EsencIA scales, this model can create human roles in customer support, content, partnerships, and community relationships.

Within four business days of commercial availability, EsencIA had already converted 9 paying customers.

What we learned

Building EsencIA taught us that accessibility means designing around how people already live, not simply simplifying an interface.

The need combines companionship, technology support, privacy, and simplicity. Older adults are not one homogeneous group: some are highly independent and want to stay current, while others rely more on family for digital tasks. EsencIA therefore had to support both autonomy and family involvement.

Zero-friction design also matters to both generations: older adults benefit from staying inside WhatsApp, while family sponsors want easy activation and clear privacy boundaries.

Technically, trustworthy AI requires much more than good responses. Consent, memory design, observability, deduplication, model routing, safety escalation, and reliable integrations are all part of the product.

Most importantly, AI can fill practical gaps without replacing family — helping with questions, technology, curiosity, and preserving stories.

What's next for EsencIA

Our immediate priority is to validate adoption, retention, monthly churn, Living Biography engagement, and operating cost per active user while growing EsencIA among Spanish-speaking older adults and family sponsors worldwide through the same WhatsApp-native core experience.

The first 20 Founder Families receive MXN $149/month in Mexico or USD $9.99/month internationally for six months; afterward — and for later families — regular pricing is MXN $199/month or USD $14.99/month. This stage focuses on commercial market penetration and sustainable unit economics.

Next, we will deepen penetration across Spanish-speaking markets, expand localized activity recommendations beyond Mexico City, grow through institutional partnerships and senior communities using a B2B2C model, and launch an English-language version.

Beyond that, we will explore additional languages and countries, travel memories and personal journaling, voice-first integrations such as Google Assistant-enabled smart speakers, and companion experiences for other life stages.
