Inspiration
Since we all have prior experience in music and piano, we were interested in making creating music more approachable. LumenNotes allows users to improve their accuracy of playing via LEDs that indicate right or wrong notes played.
What it does
Upon startup, the user selects what piece they would like to learn on the Blynk Dashboard. Then, the Arduino will flash the LED of the corresponding notes that are supposed to be played. The touch sensor will detect touch events as the user interacts with the keyboard. The Arduino then will compare the note played with the correct note, and if the note is correct, the program moves on to the next note, but if the note is incorrect, the LED flahses red and the buzzer sounds to indicate a wrong note.
How we built it
Hardware used: 49 Key USB Keyboard Piano ($27.50) Adafruit 12-Key Capacitive Touch Sensor (4 x $7.95) WS2812B LED Strip ($10.07) Arduino UNO R4 Wifi board Buzzer RFID reader Software used: Arduino IDE Libraries Adafruit_MPR121 Adafruit NeoPixel
Challenges we ran into
The Adafruit sensor library had incorrect values for touch detection, which made software challenging to create successfully. As we were testing the system, our original LED strip was connected across a higher voltage than it was rated for, so we had to pivot and redesign our setup.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud of our finished product. Because we had issues with the Adafruit library, we are very proud that we were able to fix the library and successfully implement the sensors. We are also incredibly happy with the successful execution of the LED pixels in correspondence with the notes of our music.
What we learned
The main skills we learned throughout the development of LumenNote include hardware-software integration, reading capacitative touch sensing using I2C, and application of addressable LEDs. Throughout our work on this project, we also gained a lot of experience with troubleshooting and debugging embedded hardware.
What's next for ESE 1110, Team 06, LumenNote
Extrapolating our current setup to include all notes on a full size keyboard and integrating the electrical components more discreetly.
