Inspiration
At the start of the semester, our group decided to celebrate each major exam with an escape room visit. However, we quickly realized that physical escape rooms weren’t easily accessible, and the few virtual options we found were either unavailable or lacked engagement. This challenge inspired us to design our own escape room, one that would be fun, immersive, and accessible across all platforms.
What it does
The escape room game stars Petrina, our main character, as she explores the Purdue campus, solving puzzles to obtain the code needed to unlock the Ross Ade Stadium before the big game tonight.
How we built it
We collaborated on IntelliJ through Code With Me and developed the game platform just using Java and local Java imports.
Challenges we ran into
We encountered several challenges, particularly in implementing collision detection, designing the logic of the player interaction box, and managing player and object interactions. These required a lot of debugging and problem-solving, but they also pushed us to grow as programmers.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
As freshmen with little prior experience in Java, we are proud of what we accomplished. By applying concepts from CS 180 and online resources, we successfully built a game using Java. Taking on this project taught us resilience, teamwork, and persistence. While it was not easy, the process was deeply rewarding and affirmed our excitement to keep learning.
What we learned
Through this project, we learned about important concepts beyond the classroom such as project structuring into clear packages like entity, main, object, and tile, tile-based mapping that controls how the game world is generated, interactable objects by extending a SuperObject class, collision handling, graphic integration, object inheritance, and key handling.
What's next for Escape Room
We hope this project inspires future freshmen to feel a greater sense of belonging at Purdue and in West Lafayette. Beyond that, we’re excited to continue improving the game by polishing its mechanics, enhancing graphics, and potentially adding new puzzles and features to make the experience even more engaging. ALSO WE ARE NOT DONE YET!! LEVELS AND CLUES NOT YET FULLY IMPLEMENTED
