Inspiration

The inspiration for Escape Gimi-chan comes from classic visual novels, dating sims, and the nostalgia of early-internet flash/browser games. I wanted to take the visual appeal and text-box format of visual novels and completely replace the rigid, pre-scripted dialogue trees of the past with modern generative AI. By doing this, I create a yandere character who actually listens, remembers, reacts, and evaluates the player's choices dynamically, making every playthrough unique.

What it does

In Escape Gimi-chan, you play as a high school student who has been kidnapped and tied to a chair in a locked classroom by Gimi-chan—the homeroom class representative who has developed a dangerous, obsessive crush on you. The game follows a visual novel interface:

  • Interactive Backstory: Set your character's name and play through an interactive intro scene where Gimi-chan confronts you about walking home with another girl. Your initial choice sets her starting attitude.

  • Dynamic Love Meter: In the free-chat mode, Gimi-chan's responses change depending on how you treat her. Her Love Meter tracks her affection from 0 to 100.

  • Dynamic Sprites & Web Synth Audio: She changes expressions (angry, sad, happy, unhinged, glazed) accompanied by real-time synthesized sound effect chimes and typewriter sounds.

  • Multiple Endings: Depending on your Love Meter status or whether you manage to trick Gimi-chan, you will trigger:

    • Ending 1 of 3 (Good Ending): You gain her trust, she unties you, and hands you the keys.
    • Ending 2 of 3 (Trick Ending): You successfully trick her into unlocking the door and untying you.
    • Ending 3 of 3 (Bad Ending): You anger her or fail, and she decides to keep you forever... by any means necessary.

How I built it

I built Escape Gimi-chan as a full-stack web application designed for fast, lightweight hosting.

Frontend:

  • Vanilla HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript.

Backend:

  • Node.js and Express.
  • Gemini API integration.

AI System:

  • Gemini acts as Gimi-chan's personality engine
  • Gemini receives Gimi-chan's personality rules, the player's name, and the Love Meter value
  • It outputs structured JSON containing her dialogue response, mood, and ending conditions.

Challenges I ran into

The biggest challenge I faced was time; I joined the hackathon with only 6 hours left, which pushed me to finish the project on time.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I am proud of creating a game where each player's conversational style shapes the outcome. Gimi-chan does not have a fixed set of answers. Instead, the Gemini API acts as a dynamic personality engine, adjusting her volatility, jealousy, and affection level on the fly. Combining nostalgic visual novel mechanics with state-of-the-art AI creates a highly interactive and immersive experience!

What I learned

I learned that AI can be used to reimagine game formats by adding a dynamic twist to the gameplay. I also learned a lot about AI integration in web development.
