Inspiration

We were inspired by one of the Opening Ceremony speakers, Alana Nichols and we wanted to create an app that would create a sense of community and promote inclusivity. She stated that despite all her struggles, she pushed through and took part in new activities constantly. We want our users to have fun, take risks, and seek out adventure. More importantly, we want our users to feel a sense of belonging and accomplish all their dreams!

What it does

Escapade makes life more interesting by providing users an array of activities to participate in! We have our Leaderboard Tab, where users can compete with their friends. We have our Community Tab, where users can “love/reject” activities, and meet a stranger in their community to hang out with. We have our Home Tab, where users can view the activities they want to partake in. We have the friends tab, where a user’s friends can post pictures of their activities. Lastly, we have a Search Tab, where users can enter certain parameters and the app will display activities from specific categories!

How we built it

We used Figma to plan out our wireframes. We used the React-Native framework and the Expo Go app to simulate our code as a mobile application. The main language used is Javascript, and it was styled with the React StyleSheet.

Challenges we ran into

  • We weren’t able to incorporate firebase authentication or Firestore, as some of the teammates were using the Windows OS, but running the app on Expo Go (Iphone).
  • Most of the teammates don’t have a lot of experience with mobile development, so we spent a lot of time learning/researching. We weren’t able to code all our features with the limited time we had, but we hope to expand on these after the hackathon!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We completed the front-end for all of our screens, even though they’re not all fully functional. We were able to collaborate and come up with a great idea that everyone liked. We are also VERY proud of our UI design.

What we learned

We learned how to work together as a team in a high-stress environment and were able to put our design on paper! We learned a lot about UI/UX and also how important inclusivity/accessibility is in software projects!

What's next for Escapade

  • We would like to add Firebase Auth/Firestore for users to compete with their friends and also store their ideas.
  • We would like to add full functionality to our search feature to call several APIs to generate activities given certain parameters. For example, Google Maps, bored-api etc.
  • Overall, just add more functionality to fully incorporate all our features and make it more accessible for others to use :)
