Era: The Ledger of Reality
The Inspiration
The "spark" for Era wasn't a single moment but a slow, creeping realization. We were watching the world grapple with the rise of hyper-realistic AI-generated content. We saw deepfakes, flawless "photos" of events that never happened, and audio clones that could fool a family member.
We realized we were entering an epistemic crisis—a future where "seeing is believing" would become a nostalgic, outdated phrase.
Our initial instinct, like many others, was to focus on detection. We thought, "Let's build a better AI to catch the fakes!" But we quickly saw the flaw in that logic. It's an endless, unwinnable arms race. You're always one step behind the generators.
We can express this as a function of time, $t$. Let the sophistication of generative AI be $G(t)$ and the sophistication of detection AI be $D(t)$. The problem is that we are in a state where:

The rate of generative improvement will always equal or surpass the rate of detection. It's a cat-and-mouse game where the mouse is guaranteed to get smarter, faster.
The real inspiration struck when we flipped the problem on its head: Don't try to prove what's fake. Prove what's real.
Instead of a flawed system of "likely fake," we were inspired to build a perfect, opt-in system of "verifiably authentic." If a piece of media matters—a news report, a legal document, a scientific finding—you should be able to prove when it was created, where, by what device, and that it hasn't been altered since.
That's how Era was born. Not as a fake-detector, but as a truth-ledger.
What We Learned
Building Era was a journey into uncharted territory at the intersection of cryptography, hardware security, and crypto-economics.
The "Oracle Problem" is Everywhere: We learned that the "oracle problem" isn't just about getting stock prices onto a blockchain. Our challenge was a human-scale oracle problem: how does a blockchain know about a real-world event? The answer was to create a "root of trust" at the moment of creation.
Hardware is the Root: The "aha!" moment was realizing the solution was already in billions of pockets: the Secure Enclave on iPhones and the Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) on Android. These are tiny, isolated processors designed to do one thing: create and store a private key that can never be extracted. We learned that by making our app's "shutter button" call a signing function inside this secure chip, we could create an unforgeable link between a digital file and a physical device.
Content vs. Context: This was our biggest lesson. We learned that proving a file is authentic is not the same as proving its context is true.
- Content: Our system could prove, 100%, that "This photo file is real and unaltered from this device at this time."
- Context: But what if that real photo (e.g., of a protest from 2018) is posted with the claim "This is happening right now"? This forced us to design a second layer: a "Context Court," a decentralized human oracle system where users stake our token to attest to the meaning of verified content.
Don't Use a General-Purpose Chain: Our early prototypes on Ethereum were slow and prohibitively expensive. We learned that a DePIN (Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network) project like Era must be an AppChain (built on Polkadot). We needed our own token for incentives, our own fee structure, and the ability to build core logic—like signature verification—directly into the chain itself.
How We Built It
Era is an ecosystem, not a single app. Here are the core components we built:
The Era AppChain: This is our sovereign, Proof-of-Stake blockchain. It's optimized for one thing: high-throughput, low-cost ingestion of "proof" transactions. It runs on the
$ERAtoken, which is used for gas, staking, and rewards.The "Trusted Capture" App (Mobile): This is the user's entry point. When you take a photo or video:
- The app immediately hashes the media file.
- It passes that hash to the Secure Enclave / TEE, which signs it with the device's unique, on-chip private key.
- The app uploads the (encrypted) media file to IPFS (InterPlanetary File System).
- It then broadcasts a transaction to the Era AppChain containing the
contentHash, thedeviceSignature, and theipfsCID(the link to the file).
The Verification Layer (API & RPCS): This layer is the bridge between Era AppChain and the rest of the digital world. It's how we move from a blockchain to a universal utility that websites, apps, and browsers can actually use for verification. This layer is all about providing easy, scalable access to the "truth" stored on our ledger.
CHALLENGES The Challenges We Faced
This was, by far, the hardest thing we've ever built.
The "Cold Start" Problem: A DePIN network has a classic chicken-and-egg problem. How do you get users to submit proofs when your token has no value? And how do you get news agencies or platforms to use your verification service when there's no content in the ledger? Our solution was to heavily pre-mine rewards for early adopters, creating a massive incentive to be the first to help build the "map of reality."
Hardware Walled Gardens: Accessing the Secure Enclave isn't something Apple just lets you do. The Secure Enclave is a tightly controlled hardware security module, and Apple provides no public APIs for direct access. This makes it the most significant technical limitation we face, and research is ongoing to identify viable integration approaches.
The Game Theory of "Truth": Designing the "Context Court" was a nightmare. How many jurors? How much do they stake? What's the reward/slash ratio to prevent a "51% attack" on the context of a major global event? We spent more time whiteboarding the game theory of this single contract than any other part of the system.
UX, UX, UX: A user doesn't care about
contentHashesoripfsCIDs. They just want to know, "Is this real?" We are trying to ruthlessly abstract every single cryptographic step behind a user experience that felt as simple as a normal camera app.
What's next for Era
Building the ledger was just step one. The future is about making it the universal standard for truth.
Ecosystem Expansion (The "Supply Side"): Our immediate focus is growing our DePIN network. We're launching campaigns to onboard freelance journalists, public investigators, scientists, and eventually the general public. We want millions of "trusted capture" devices in the wild, creating a high-resolution, real-time map of reality.
Integration & Partnerships (The "Demand Side"): We are actively developing an Era SDK and API. This will allow any platform—social media networks, news organizations, messaging apps, and even insurance companies—to easily integrate Era's verification. Imagine a "Verified by Era" checkmark next to a photo on X (formerly Twitter) or as a filter in a journalist's photo database.
The Leap to Firmware: Our long-term goal is to move beyond our app. We will try to discuss with smartphone and camera manufacturers to embed Era's signing logic at the firmware or OS level. This is the holy grail: a future where every photo taken by a device is born with an optional, hardware-signed proof of reality.
Beyond Media: Photos and videos are just the beginning. The Era ledger is designed to be a universal anchor for any data. Our roadmap includes expanding to secure document signing, verifying scientific datasets, and authenticating audio logs.
This journey has just begun, but with Era, we are building more than a blockchain. Our ultimate vision is a future where digital trust is no longer a question because if it matters, it's on Era. We're building a tool to anchor our digital world to our physical one and creating the infrastructure for a more truthful digital age: a permanent, immutable, and decentralized "ledger of reality."
