Inspiration
Equita was inspired by challenges I experienced in my own school environment. I noticed that not every student has the same access to support, opportunities, resources, or a platform to express their needs. Some students struggle silently because they do not know where to find help, while others may not even be aware of the resources available to them.
I wanted to build something that could make support more accessible and help create a more equal school experience. This project is personal to me because it is based on a real problem I have seen and experienced—not just an idea from a hypothetical situation.
What it does
Equita is designed to help students identify their needs, find useful resources, and feel more supported within their school community. It aims to make information easier to access and encourage students to seek help without feeling isolated or overlooked.
The project focuses on creating a more equitable environment where every student has a better chance to succeed, regardless of their background, circumstances, or access to existing support systems.
How we built it
We built Equita by first thinking about the problems students commonly face in school and the barriers that prevent them from receiving support. We then designed the project around simplicity, accessibility, and ease of use.
Our process included:
- Identifying problems in the school environment
- Thinking about what students would actually need
- Planning the main features and user experience
- Building the interface and core functionality
- Testing the project and improving it based on feedback
We tried to keep the design clear and approachable so that students could use it without needing technical knowledge or extensive instructions.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was turning a personal experience into a solution that could help a wider group of students. Everyone experiences school differently, so it was important to avoid creating a tool that only addressed one specific situation.
We also faced challenges with deciding which features were most important, organizing the user experience, and making sure the project stayed simple instead of becoming overwhelming. Since this project focuses on real student needs, we had to think carefully about privacy, accessibility, and how comfortable someone would feel using it.
Another challenge was working within limited time and resources while still trying to create something meaningful and functional.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that Equita is based on a real problem and has the potential to make a meaningful difference. Rather than building something only for demonstration purposes, we created a project connected to an experience that affects students in real life.
We are also proud of:
- Turning a personal challenge into a practical solution
- Creating a project focused on fairness and inclusion
- Designing something with students’ needs in mind
- Learning how to build and improve a complete project
- Creating a foundation that could be expanded in the future
What we learned
Through this project, we learned that building a solution is not only about writing code. It also requires understanding the people who will use it and the problems they face.
We learned how important it is to:
- Listen to users and understand their experiences
- Start with a clear problem before designing a solution
- Keep interfaces simple and accessible
- Test ideas and make improvements
- Work through uncertainty and technical challenges
- Use technology to address real-world issues
Most importantly, we learned that personal experiences can inspire projects with a larger purpose. A problem that affects one person may also be affecting many others.
What's next for Equita
Our next goal is to continue improving Equita based on feedback from students, teachers, and school communities. We would like to add more resources, improve personalization, and make the platform useful for students in different school environments.
In the future, Equita could include:
- More school and community resources
- Personalized recommendations for students
- Anonymous feedback and support features
- Improved accessibility options
- Tools for schools to better understand student needs
- Partnerships with counselors, educators, and student organizations
Equita started with a problem I experienced in my own school environment, but the goal is to grow it into something that can help students everywhere feel more supported, included, and empowered.
