Inspiration
In Eastern Africa, millions of people face significant challenges in accessing healthcare services due to the lack of proper identification. This issue disproportionately affects marginalized groups such as refugees, asylum-seekers, and rural populations, leading to inequities in healthcare access and poor health outcomes. Inspired by the potential of digital technology to solve real-world problems, we set out to create a solution that ensures everyone can receive the healthcare they need without barriers.
What it does
EquiHealth ID provides a universal Digital Health ID linked to biometric data, enabling seamless access to healthcare services. This ID integrates with existing Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, allowing healthcare providers to access comprehensive patient histories. The accompanying mobile application allows individuals to manage their health ID, view medical records, and schedule appointments, even in areas with limited internet connectivity. Blockchain technology ensures the security and privacy of health data, fostering trust among users.
How we built it
We started by conducting extensive research and needs assessment through surveys and interviews with healthcare providers and target populations. This helped us understand the specific challenges and requirements. We then designed and developed the core platform, including the Digital Health ID generation and verification system, and integrated it with existing EHR systems through APIs. The mobile application was designed with user-friendly interfaces and offline functionality. Throughout the process, we collaborated with industry experts to ensure the platform met security and usability standards.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was ensuring data privacy and security, particularly in regions with limited technological infrastructure. Another significant challenge was achieving interoperability with diverse healthcare systems and ensuring the platform's usability for non-tech-savvy individuals. Additionally, building trust among users and healthcare providers required continuous engagement and education about the benefits and security measures of the platform.

We have designed a comprehensive and innovative solution that addresses critical healthcare access issues in Eastern Africa. Through extensive research and collaboration with healthcare providers and target populations, we developed a detailed blueprint for EquiHealth ID, a platform that promises to integrate seamlessly with existing Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems. We are proud of our thorough needs assessment and the positive feedback received during the conceptual phase. Our solution’s potential to enhance patient data management, promote inclusivity, and improve health outcomes across the region has been widely recognized. These accomplishments lay a strong foundation for the future development and deployment of EquiHealth ID.
What we learned
Throughout the project, we learned the importance of continuous user engagement and feedback. Understanding the needs and challenges of both healthcare providers and end-users was crucial in designing a solution that is both effective and user-friendly. We also gained valuable insights into the technical challenges of integrating digital ID systems with existing healthcare infrastructure and the importance of robust data security measures.
What's next for EquiHealth ID
Our next steps include scaling the platform to more healthcare facilities across the region, conducting further training sessions for healthcare providers, and enhancing the mobile application's features based on user feedback. We also plan to collaborate with policymakers to advocate for the broader adoption of digital health IDs. Ultimately, our goal is to make EquiHealth ID a standard solution for healthcare access, ensuring no one in Eastern Africa is left behind.
