Inspiration

Blackouts don’t affect everyone equally—low-income communities often suffer first. We wanted to build something that ensures fair access to energy, making the grid not just efficient, but also equitable.

What it does

Equigrid is an AI-powered platform that:

  • Forecasts energy demand in vulnerable areas.
  • Prioritizes fair energy distribution during shortages.
  • Provides actionable insights to grid operators, ensuring no community is left in the dark first.

How we built it

  • Collected sample datasets of energy demand + socio-economic indicators.
  • Used time-series forecasting (LSTM/Prophet) to predict grid loads.
  • Built a fairness layer that balances distribution across regions.
  • Developed a dashboard for operators to visualize risks and make equitable decisions.

Challenges we ran into

  • Finding socio-economic datasets aligned with grid demand.
  • Balancing efficiency vs fairness in our model.
  • Integrating forecasting models with a simple, real-time dashboard.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Designed a system that reframes energy forecasting as a tool for social equity.
  • Successfully prototyped demand forecasting with fairness prioritization.
  • Built an interactive dashboard that clearly communicates blackout risks.

What we learned

  • Technical: Time-series forecasting, fairness-aware AI, and data visualization.
  • Social: How deeply energy inequality impacts vulnerable communities.
  • Team: The importance of designing tech with human impact in mind.

What's next for Equigrid

  • Integrate with real-world grid APIs for live testing.
  • Partner with utilities/governments to pilot the solution.
  • Expand to renewable energy grids (solar/wind) and disaster resilience planning.
  • Add blockchain for transparency in energy allocation.
