Inspiration

As a woman with an intense early career in strategic consulting, I found myself overwhelmed—not just by the demands of a full-time job, but by what felt like a second, invisible job: managing the mental load of home life.

This wasn’t only about cleaning (which can be outsourced), but the ongoing mental charge of: scheduling appointments, organizing daily logistics, planning vacations, keeping track of everyone’s needs.

While I was feeling increasingly anxious and exhausted, my significant other thought I was exaggerating. He couldn’t see the hidden work—the constant cognitive load I was carrying. This imbalance wasn't just about time; it was about the emotional and psychological toll of being the sole person responsible for “making everything run.”

What it does

Equalizer is a work-in-progress, but its mission is clear: To recognize, measure, and re-distribute the unseen labor that too often falls on one person’s shoulders. Concretely, the user creates their household in the app and shares a link with their partner (similar to how Tricount works). At the beginning, each user is asked about their preferences regarding household chores, and the app proposes a suggested division of tasks. Throughout the week, each household member logs their contributions. The dashboard displays a ranking based on time spent, making it easy to see whether the division of labor is balanced or not.

How we built it and challenges we ran into

One of my biggest challenges was simply: Where do I start? I had never developed anything before.

Started with Figma I created an interactive design to express my concept clearly and share it with the BOLT tool.

** Built the App Screen by Screen** As a complete beginner, I learned by doing.

** Challenges ** However, I soon discovered the technical requirements for releasing an app on the Play Store—something I hadn’t anticipated. Unfortunately, I did not specify that it should be in ReactNative, and realized it on the last days, when my tokens were almost out. I also had a design issue, as even without modifying my prompts, when reloading the BOLT page, the design of the app would change and I needed to prompt again to find back the design I validated. I also wanted a connection through Google and Apple accounts but did not realize a specific registration with those corporations was necessary.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

As a beginner, it is already an accomplishment to have an app working (even if not perfect) and encourage me to pursue in this direction until I made it to the Apple and Google stores.

What we learned

Even with incredible AI tools, developing an app requires preparation and anticipation. But I am very glad i took this Hackathon as an opportunity to start. The first step is often the hardest one.

What's next for Equalizer

The app is not finalized, but I am sharing it now to acknowledge my progress, commit to completing it over the summer and celebrate the growth this project represents.
