Inspiration
Education has been a primary driving source for most of our lives. The support we have gotten in our communities to further our education motivated us to always give back to the community in need. Throughout high school we worked with numerous organizations such as Kumon, PREPARE nonprofit, Discovery Place etc that provided supplemental education to interested students. EquaLearn was a way to compile resources into a single website for kids to play around on and learn from to further their education and prepare for the future.
What it does
Currently, EquaLearn is a website in development that has a few resources set up for kindergarteners, first graders, and second graders. It focuses primarily on English language development in students worldwide from a variety of backgrounds. It begins with flashcards that students can use to study the material and then is followed by a series of questions to ensure the students have thoroughly understood the concepts.
How we built it
We used css, javascript, and html to create the website using VS Code. As a group we split up tasks and worked on different aspects of the website to ensure that it was developed in the best way possible in the given time.
Challenges we ran into
Due to our beginner skills in css, html, and javascript we struggled to figure out the syntax for our code. We also took time to debug and format the code throughout the project because we had to learn higher level skills in the language and create the project simultaneously.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
As our first successful hackathon, we are proud that after 14 hours of working on the project we were finally able to complete the webpage we had begun earlier in the day. Regardless of the number of obstacles, such as bugs, in our code, we perservered through, which got us to where our project is now.
What we learned
While the solution is simple and relatively small scale, in the future it can be adapted to help a wider population. Education reform and supplemental resources can play a huge role in developing interest for kids to further their education and can play a significant role in reducing poverty rates in the future. As kids choose to go in the right path and get sustainable jobs, they are able to support their families and pull them out of poverty.
What's next for EquaLearn - "Education for All, Empowerment for Everyone"
We hope to increase the word bank for the number of quiz questions to ensure it generates a random quiz each time. We also plan to expand the content to further the knowledge across multiple grade levels to help a wider audience. This can further the impact we make on those lacking the proper educational resources and can foster career paths in the sustainable direction.
