Inspiration

“Today, we live in a world where screens are everywhere. Phones, laptops, consoles — it feels like gadgets have taken over our time. Many of us end up scrolling endlessly on Instagram or bingeing videos, and suddenly hours are gone. We blame technology, but the truth is, technology itself isn’t the problem. It’s how we use it.

students around the world, not wasting time on gadgets, but using games to learn medicine, solve climate problems, or train their minds. Imagine us creating games that raise awareness about mental health, or inspire kindness, or even crowdsource solutions to global issues.

What it does

Converts notes, PDFs, or text into structured flashcards automatically. • Uses spaced repetition to optimize long-term retention. • Inserts fun, interactive games (quizzes, matching, memory puzzles) at regular intervals to fight fatigue and boost recall. • Tracks user progress, provides reminders, and adapts difficulty based on performance.

How we built it

Frontend: React.js with TailwindCSS for an interactive, lightweight UI. • Backend: FastAPI (Python) serving REST APIs for flashcard generation, scheduling, and scoring. • Database: PostgreSQL for structured flashcards & user progress; Redis for caching game states. • AI Integration: OpenAI API to automatically generate Q&A from text and Hugging Face models for summarization. • Games: Phaser.js for browser-based mini-games embedded within React. • Auth & Hosting: Firebase Auth for secure logins; Deployed frontend on Vercel and backend on AWS.

Challenges we ran into

Designing games that balance fun with actual learning reinforcement. • Handling real-time sync between flashcards and games across devices. • Getting AI-generated flashcards to be accurate and contextually correct (avoiding hallucinations). • Optimizing database queries for spaced repetition scheduling without slowing down performance.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Built a seamless integration between flashcards and games to keep learning engaging. • Developed a dynamic spaced repetition algorithm tailored to each learner’s pace. • Successfully deployed a full-stack solution that works across web and mobile. • Created a clean, distraction-free UI that keeps learners focused.

What we learned

How to combine AI (for content generation) with gamification (for engagement) in a meaningful way. • Importance of user experience design in educational tools—engagement matters as much as accuracy. • Learned to manage multi-platform deployment (web + mobile) with shared backend APIs. • Balancing technical performance (fast load, smooth animations) with educational depth.

What's next for Epoch

Add multiplayer learning games where friends can challenge each other with flashcards. • Build an offline-first mobile app (React Native) for low-connectivity regions. • Expand to support speech-based learning (listen to flashcards, answer verbally). • Introduce leaderboards & community challenges to keep learners motivated. • Partner with schools/universities to integrate Epoch into classrooms.
