Inspiration

EpiCare was founded by a team of innovative entrepreneurs interested in providing an affordable epilepsy-tracking device.

What it does

Our smartwatch tracks health metrics and fitness activity like other health-oriented watches, but it also accounts for people with epilepsy by detecting seizures and predicting future episodes. EpiCare uses advanced biosensor technology to recognize convulsive body movements like intense shaking and pulse irregularities to detect oncoming seizures. Its unique monitoring system links to our app, which, based on the duration of a seizure, will alert user-chosen contacts or the ambulance if life-threatening. Unlike other seizure-detecting devices, EpiCare can help to predict future seizure episodes before they even happen using machine learning. EpiCare allows patients to stay active, while simultaneously enabling epileptic patients, their caregivers, and doctors to monitor patients’ vital signs, lifestyle, and episode patterns through a dedicated mobile app.

How we built it

We first started off by doing tons of research about seizures, such as the causes, effects, statistics, and how to detect them. Using this data, we came up with our own unique ideas for the development of the perfect EpiCare (Business Plan). We took into consideration how long seizures last, who the EpiCare calls when there is an emergency, and even added a GPS feature. Our goal was to make this smartwatch as efficient and easy-to-use as possible.

Challenges we ran into

Coming up with a good idea took up a lot of our time on the first day. We were not all experienced with coding as well, so we ended up asking a lot of questions to the mentors. Also, building the site itself proved to be an extensive challenge since collaborating on Qoom was very difficult. We accidentally canceled out each other's edits without realizing it while writing simultaneously, and it was difficult to only have one person editing at once.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we were able to produce our start-up idea, app layout, and basic website in the amount of time given. Even though we were unfamiliar with many of our resources, we got through it together.

What we learned

Through the process of creating EpiCare we were all taught so much about how this disease affects those who have it making it more evident that this product needed to be made accessible to those less fortunate. We also learned how to code and work with Qoom.

What's next for EpiCare: Putting Fitness & Health at the Forefront

Currently we are only available in the USA, but as we grow we aim to branch out into brick and mortar stores located in underdeveloped nations. Since there are 3.4 million people with epilepsy in the U.S., and over 65 million people with epilepsy globally, there is definitely room for growth and improvement.
