Inspiration
We noticed that people often wish they had a creative excuse ready on the spot — for work, school, or even casual conversations. Most online "excuse generators" are outdated, repetitive, or not context-aware. We wanted to build something smarter and fun — an AI-driven excuse generator that can personalize responses while adding optional voice outputs for a humorous or realistic touch. The idea came from everyday situations where having a clever excuse could save time, reduce awkwardness, or simply entertain.
What it does
EpicExcuse.me allows users to generate instant, AI-powered excuses for any situation. Users simply enter what they need an excuse for (e.g., “Late for a meeting”), and the AI provides a creative and context-aware excuse. The app offers two modes:
Standard Mode: Practical, usable excuses.
Silly Mode: Over-the-top, absurd and funny excuses for entertainment.
Users can also:
Listen to AI-generated voices reading the excuse (using ElevenLabs).
Share excuses via link or copy text.
(Planned) Record their own voice to personalize excuses for themselves.
How we built it
Bolt.new: Primary build platform (frontend, structure).
Gemini AI API: For dynamic text generation (custom excuses).
ElevenLabs API: Converts AI-generated text into realistic or funny voices.
Netlify: Deployment and hosting. Design: Clean, minimal UI focused on ease of use, mobile-ready.
No personal data is stored — privacy-first approach.
Challenges we ran into
Managing AI token usage (Gemini, ElevenLabs) within reasonable limits.
Maintaining tone control — ensuring the excuses stay appropriate and safe for all audiences.
Handling domain setup (unexpected domain pricing & verification issues).
Integrating AI voice smoothly without delay or inconsistency.
Keeping the app fast despite multiple API calls.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Functional AI excuse generator with real-time response.
Integrated AI voice output successfully — makes the experience more engaging.
Clean, user-friendly interface that works well on desktop and mobile.
Delivered both "useful" and "silly" modes — balancing utility with fun.
What we learned
Importance of refining AI prompts for safe and creative output.
Managing third-party AI services (Gemini & ElevenLabs) without excessive cost.
Domain and hosting intricacies (IONOS, Netlify, Bolt).
The potential of lightweight tools (Bolt.new) to quickly build fun, working web apps.
What's next for Epic Excuse
User Voice Cloning (Optional): Allow users to record and use their own voice for excuses via ElevenLabs or similar — making excuses sound like them. (Opt-in feature for privacy control.)
Excuse History: Save and revisit favorite excuses.
Simple Leaderboard: Track and share the most liked or funniest excuses globally.
Mobile Optimization: Improve usability on phones and tablets.
AI Video Excuses (Optional, Paid): For those who want to create and share visual excuses — possibly a premium feature.
