Inspiration
In a society where human's use of technology only seem to disconnect them from the moment, we've created EnVoyage. This application aims to connect us to not only the present moment but, the moments of the countless people who live and have lived amongst us. Scenery and architecture demonstrate the beauty of the world we thrive in and the credibility of human creation - a credit to our potential of finding art in everything we see. We wish to capture this art with technology and use our tools to enhance history, not diminish it.
What it does
EnVoyage is a travel app, it uses the users live location and highlights the history surrounding them. Users can read the written history of the iconic sight they are near and see photos of the location over the years. Users can enjoy the seeing the changes time has brought to the site and see how other users are currently enjoying the site. They too can add photos of their own and comment of their experience, creating a local community over shared love of the site.
How we built it
Our app uses front end and backend technology to enhance our users experience. Customers can enjoy a lovingly colored user interface to navigate the app created by Figma and various CSS and javascript elements. Behind the scenes the various location API sponsored by Google Maps are used for real time location sharing and information gathering. This is coded with Java and React.
Challenges we ran into
Our greatest struggle was reducing our idea for the sake of a functional prototype. We had (and still have) great expectations for EnVoyage's potential but in order to create a demo for the sake of judging we prioritized the most critical features of the app being the location services and informational pages.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We have accomplished two function prototypes. These demonstrate our vision for the user interface and the functional code elements. We entered this hackathon with limited experience towards creating projects under times constraints but thanks to WEHacks incredible resources, we have grown exponentially in both skills and experience. Overall, our accomplishments are not only reflected in the products we created but the knowledge we gained.
What we learned
Entering this hackathon we all had a bit of a learning curve to overcome. While some had design experience, they had never worked with Figma. Others had coding knowledge, but API implementation was new territory. Thankfully with the aid of workshops and online resources were were able to gain new understanding that we will be able to implement in the future.
What's next for EnVoyage
EnVoyage has incredible potential. Our next steps with this project are to improve user experience. Perhaps the most critical would be to transition this app from a desktop application to a mobile one. Our app depends on users having the opportunity to combine traditional communication with modern technology and an application that users can travel with would accomplish just that. We also regret not being able to accomplish our complete vision for the Figma page in the time we had, our next steps would be to refine the UI design. Finally, in order to personalize every users experience we would want to provide our users with customizable features such as interests, languages, and color schemes.
