Inspiration

As someone who has started (and stopped) endless hobbies and goals, from 75 Hard and new business ideas to "learning Spanish" (on my yearly goal list for 10+ years, btw). I'd always get super excited at first, only to drop them once the initial dopamine spike wore off.

I started to realise that maybe it wasn't that I couldn't stick to things, but that I'd never broken my goals down into small, manageable steps. I'd get overwhelmed or unsure what to do next, then move on to something new and shiny instead.

I couldn't find a system that worked for me, so in December 2023 I built my own Notion template. I shared it in a YouTube video, and it got over 10k views, 1.8k downloads and lots of great feedback. But (there's a but)... I still struggled to use it consistently myself because Notion isn't great on mobile. That's when I thought: what if I turned this into an app?

My partner had dabbled with mobile development, so in May 2026 we started building the initial structure together. But as work got busier, he no longer had the time to keep working on it with me. I really wanted to keep the idea moving, so he suggested, “Why don’t you give it a go yourself with Claude Code?”.

I'd never coded in my life and my background was in marketing, so the idea of building it myself hadn't even crossed my mind. But I thought, "what do I have to lose?" and started prompting.

And before I knew it, I was hooked. There was something addictive about turning an idea in my head into working code and seeing it appear in the app minutes later. I was soon spending 4+ hours a day on it: before and after work, and on weekends.

Originally, my plan was to have it ready by the end of the year, but then Shipaton was announced, and suddenly I had a much closer deadline.

What it does

All those hours of iterating with Claude turned into Envisioned:

A goal-planning app that helps you actually follow through on your goals by breaking them down into actionable steps. It's built on the OKR framework (Objectives and Key Results), where every big goal is broken into milestones, and each milestone into the tasks or habits that move it forward. As you tick things off, your progress fills in, so you always know how close you are.

It also comes with:

  • Vision board widgets for your home screen, so your goals are the first thing you see when you pick up your phone
  • Memories: a gallery of completed goals and milestones you can look back on to see how far you've come
  • Streaks that reward you for checking in and showing up every day

It's available on iOS and Android, with a web app currently in beta (envisioned.app). New users get a 7-day free trial, then choose a monthly or yearly plan.

How it's built

Every line of code was written by prompting Claude Code.

The mobile app is built with Flutter, using one codebase for iOS and Android, while the home screen widgets are native iOS with SwiftUI.

The web app, currently in beta, is a separate React + TypeScript app built for desktop. Both apps run on the same Firebase backend for authentication, database and image storage, so a change made on your phone appears in the browser instantly.

RevenueCat handles subscriptions and the paywall, and a subscription bought on mobile also unlocks the web app.

I designed the screens in Canva, then brought them to life with Claude Design.

Challenges I ran into

I'd never coded before, so almost everything was new, and I was building the app around a full-time job. But, a few moments stand out:

  • My MacBook screen died two days into Shipaton (oops), and I nearly lost everything. Lesson learned: push your code regularly.
  • Apple rejected my first submission because of a missing EULA link.
  • Launching on Android meant finding 12 testers to use the app for 14 days before Google would approve it.
  • After launch, the biggest challenge became conversion. People were downloading the app but dropping off at the paywall, which took several rounds of onboarding and paywall changes to improve.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

  • Shipping my first ever app, on iOS and Android, with a web app in beta
  • 1073 downloads and 1012 sign-ups in 47 days
  • 66 active subscriptions, 61 active trials and €865 in total revenue
  • 62% of active trials on the yearly plan
  • 36.2% of all users come from Google Play, despite launching a month after iOS
  • Sticking with one project from day one of Shipaton to the very end (as someone who built a goal app to help solve the issue that I could never stick to my goals)

What I learned

That having a non-technical background is no longer a barrier to building an app, as long as you test properly! I learnt that the hard way after trusting AI-written code a few too many times and ending up with a couple of buggy releases, so now I ask Claude what to check after every change. I also learnt that onboarding and the paywall matter as much as the features themselves, that sharing unfinished work early gets you the most useful feedback, and that I'm capable of showing up every day for two months to build an idea I'd put off for years.

What's next for Envisioned - Goal Tracker

  • Improving the web app
  • A/B testing the paywall and onboarding
  • Localising the app for more languages and markets
  • Continue to grow social media channels through organic marketing
  • Adding social features to make goal-setting feel more collaborative and accountable
