Inspiration
While observing a disconnect in finding dedicated volunteering spaces for sustainability, we recognized an additional challenge: discerning which areas genuinely needed immediate intervention. By marrying real-time air pollution data with a platform geared towards sustainability efforts, we aimed to bridge this gap, ensuring that people not only find opportunities to help the planet but also address critical zones most affected by pollution.
What it does
Enviroteer allows users to view, sign up for, and host sustainability-focused volunteering events. Beyond offering a seamless user experience, the app's standout feature recommends events in areas where the air pollution index indicates a pressing need. It also archives past events that users have engaged in for reflection and continuity.
How we built it
We built the application in Android Studio, primarily using Java programming language. We used Firebase for implementing the backend. We used GitHub for collaboration and Discord for effective communication.
Challenges we ran into
We struggled to build an intuitive and attractive user interface. Since we were in very different time zones, collaborating on a fully functional application in a limited time was tough.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have made a functioning Android application that creates real-world impact.
What we learned
We learned how to use Firebase, and some of us knew how to use Android Studio for the first time!
What's next for Enviroteer
We're looking to integrate popular social media platforms, allowing users to effortlessly share and promote events. Additionally, a rewards system will be introduced, where participation earns points for users, which can be redeemed for various eco-friendly incentives.
