Inspiration

Even in the smallest communities there are clay workers would are well aware of various clays and processing. The tend to be capable and eager for new products and processes.

What it does

The environmentally responsible water filters and cookstoves they will produce will get good environmental health to their neighbors.

How we built it

The requisite clay materials and resources as well as the traditions are nearly everywhere.

Challenges we ran into

Stakeholders in providing water treatment and cookstoves want to provide expensive approaches to the poor who cannot afford these. Consequently implementation is subsidized by donors.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Ceramic water filter projects in Kenya and Nepal. Ceramic cook stove projects in Tanzania, Senegal, Ghana, Chad, Guinea, Cameroon and others.

What we learned

Those working with clay, I.e. local ceramists, tend to be quite capable and eager to learn more.

What's next for Environmental Health and Development for All

Several books have been published and will serve as training material. Educated ceramists can use these to train those who have had no such opportunity.
