Footprinter: Environmental Footprint Calculator

Inspiration

We were inspired to make this Environmental Footprint Calculator as we know how much environmental waste is made due to development of technology, and therefore we need an estimate of how much area is required in producing the natural resources which we consume and to absorb its waste. We thought our program would be one way to do so.

What it does

This website calculates the environment footprint, which refers to the area that a defined population / organisation requires to produce the natural resources it consumes and to absorb its waste in global hectare (gha).

How we built it

We used Adobe XD to create a design of the website for Environmental Footprint Calculator, and tried to use Google Cloud document AI and Jina to analyze pdf data about carbon fuels, which we got from online websites.

Challenges we ran into

We tried to use Google Cloud AI to analyze the data. However, the AI was not perfect, and there is a possibility for the website to provide a not really useful link- not comparable to the company’s situation.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to try new technologies like Google Cloud and Jina through this Hackathon, and also two of us were using Adobe XD for the first time. Even though the analyzation was not perfect, we were able to accomplish some analyzation through these technology.

What we learned

We learned how to use Google Cloud Document AI and also how to use Jina to analyze data.

What's next for Environmental Footprint Calculator

We will try to get more precise data using data analysis technology from Google Cloud Document AI, and also try to train and evaluate a Machine Learning Model that clusters the companies into groups so that we can get more useful information through analysis.
