Inspiration

I created the Environmental Education Memory Match Game due to the lack of educational resources for climate education. The climate crisis is one of the biggest and most pressing issues facing our society today, and solving it will require action from everyone. A proper understanding of the impact and consequences is needed in order to spur change.

What it does

My project replicates a memory match game by using buttons as cards. The user can click these buttons to flip the cards over and display the term or picture for that card. The top label will display whether the pair of cards is a match or not as well as the total number of matches. Once a match is made, the cards will gray out. If the two cards aren't a match, the cards will flip over once the user clicks their next card. The user may restart at any time, which shuffles the cards or exit the game completely using the bottom buttons.

How we built it

I used Java and the IDE JGrasp for my project.

Challenges we ran into

I ran into numerous challenges, as this was my first time completing a project in such a short period of time. I especially had difficulty with corresponding the environmental terms with their respective pictures as well as randomizing the term or picture with each card. After a lot of debugging and intensive testing, I was able to solve these issues and create a functional game.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am extremely proud of myself for even creating a project since at the beginning I was unsure if I would be able to finish in such a short period of time. I managed to push through all the stress and errors to create a functional game, which is something that I didn't think was in my capabilities. I have gained a newfound respect for myself and my programming abilities.

What we learned

I learned so much, not just knowledge-wise, but also mindset-wise. Most importantly, I learned the power of perseverance and how I can accomplish incredible things with dedication and hard work. I can't wait to use these skills in my daily life and even at future hackathons.

What's next for Environmental Education Memory Game

I plan on expanding my project by adding more terms and a start screen which will allow the user to specify a specific topic they would like to learn about, such as water, pollution, wildlife, etc. I managed to create the Environmental Education Memory Game in a very short period of time, so I am excited to see how I can improve the game with more time.
