Inspiration

We were inspired by the many art structures created out of reused materials to encourage others to protect the environment. The global environmental issues are something we care about and these pieces of art seemed like the perfect thing to share to inspire people to save the environment. Ultimately, we decided that a digital art gallery would make for a great medium in letting others learn about the importance of the environment.

What it does

In this program, you can view and learn about different pieces of art from artists around the world, all of which are designed to promote the environment. Each of these artistic creations was either made with the intention of inspiring environmental protection or is made out of recycled materials.

The problem the program address is the ongoing decline of the Earth's health. Reusing materials is one of the most simple ways for people to counteract this problem and reduce the deterioration of the environment.

How we built it

The program was made using Java with the help of the Processing library for graphics. We gathered information about the environment-related artworks online. Then, we combined images found on the internet with graphics we created ourselves (using Canva & Autodesk Sketchbook) inside of the project. After assembling everything together in Eclipse, we created the Environmental Art Gallery!

Challenges we ran into

  • Getting project to run on different group members’ computers
  • Creating and setting up our GitHub repository
  • Making buttons clickable (struggling with proper conversion between mouse location and window pixels)

What we learned

  • How to set up a GitHub repository and share it with project collaborators
  • How to put libraries into a java project
  • How to install and set up JDK software
  • How to toggle between different screens
  • Learned about various environmental artists & their artwork

What's next for Environmental Art Gallery

  • Adding more statues to introduce more artworks
  • Making graphics better for certain parts
  • Using another library to make graphics less pixelated
  • Adding light background music
