Inspiration
So many people are unsure of whether or not a trash item can be recycled, and oftentimes, they will just assume that all will be processed perfectly in the recycling plant, and toss their unrecyclable trash into the blue bin. However, this is untrue, and many cities are considering ending their recycling programs due to misuse of the recycling bins. We want to teach young children which trash items are supposed to be recycled and which aren't. This game uses several everyday objects as trash items, allowing children to make the connection in their real lives with the items they interact with in-game.
What it does
Our app has several levels, each with varying difficulty levels of trash items. For example, the first level includes only paper trash, while plastics and glass are introduced in later levels.
How we built it
We first designed the look of the map and trash items on a drawing app, which is where we also drew the final background and icons. Then, we used Unity to turn the 2d maps and items into 3d ones.
Challenges we ran into
We had never done coding at such a fast pace before, and it was stressful trying to accomplish everything we wanted within 24 hours. We had to simplify several components and include only the most important elements of the game in the final version.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of completing this project in general, as we have never competed in a hackathon before this. Additionally, the graphics of the game came out way better than expected, and the look of each item was sleek and well-designed.
What we learned
We learned the proper pacing for a short hackathon, as well as several shortcuts to get around certain difficult blocks of code by either simplifying the game design or just omitting certain abilities.
What's next for Envirocycle
We plan on continually adding new levels and more types of trash. After all, the more that children see this variety of trash, the more likely they will incorporate these correct recycling techniques in daily life. Additionally, we want to finish adding in all the features that we cut out due to time, like selecting characters to play as, such as a bunny or duck. group: 18-, sustainability track
