Making My First Doom Mod
Inspiration
Having an interest in gaming history, I've heard a lot about modding. I wanted to try my hand at making my own mod. I specifically chose Doom because of the reputation it has in gaming and modding history, and the extensive tutorials and documentation provided by the Doom modding community.
What it does
Replaces the Rocket Launcher with a custom weapon called the "MagicWand". The changes include unique sprites and some minor tweaks to the function of the weapon.
How we built it
All the coding was done in a program called SLADE in a language called Decorate.
Challenges we ran into
Because of my inexperience modding, reverse engineering, and coding, a lot of the process involved a grueling hunt to find out what was going wrong with my code. In particular there was this error that was happening where once the player fired MagicWand a single time, all the weapons would be disabled.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Despite the grueling process, getting the mod to work properly was really exciting. When I got the code to run for the first time I literally jumped out of my chair. Seeing my mod function puts a smile to my face.
What we learned
Seeing the code that gave the info and stats for everything in Doom (including Weapons, Enemies, and the player), was an eye opening experience to how games function and how I might be able to create more in the future.
What's next for MagicWand Doom Mod
I will most likely try to implement more changes, particularly to the rockets. I also want to implement my own custom enemies.
