Inspiration
I am a Bioinformatics graduate student, and I wanted to showcase this field of study by implementing computer science methods I have utilized this database frequently, so I thought it was a good opportunity to conceptualize modifications for the hackathon.
What it does
Improves the appearance of the website and includes user-friendly access to different tools to examine interested DNA/protein sequences.
How we built it
Concepts are presented in Google Slides, while the updated Ensembl website was created with VS Code (HTML, JavaScript, CSS).
Challenges we ran into
Relaying Bioinformatics concepts to a computer-science-based audience.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Being able to apply my field of study to a hackathon instead of relying solely on my computer science experiences.
What we learned
Creating search bars, implementing drop-down menus, and being able to incorporate uploading a file onto the website.
What's next for Ensemble Update: Navigating the Genome with Precision
Adding more hyperlinks to other pages, creating better visualizations of genomes, and incorporating more up-to-date features so the website is always updated.
