Inspiration
The inspiration behind this app was that many of my peers and students I know didn't really know how to make the best out of their summers. As much as you want to enjoy the summer, there's also pressure to spend it preparing for the upcoming school year. This web app makes navigating the perfect balance between learning and having fun during the summer break easier and more accessible to students K-12. Many students are unaware of what there is out there that they can do. Our app gives them a place to start!
What it does
Based on your age, the app will match you to a few of the most popular summer learning programs your age group seeks out. From there, you can go through the list the app filtered for you until you find one that you like. After you click the submit button at the bottom, the app opens the website of the summer program you selected so you can get started on your application.
How we built it
I used the app lab in code.org to build the app and explored the different functions that the code.org provided.
Challenges we ran into
One of the challenges I ran into was finding a way to filter the list of summer programs that had a specific age range and age restrictions. It was a bit hard coming up with the best way for it to work, but I pulled through by trial and error.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
One of the accomplishments I was proud of was that the app will take the user to the website of the summer program they chose to start their application form at the very end.
What we learned
Something that I took away from this hackathon was that you don't need to solve the world's problems to make a difference, you don't need a whole army behind you to make an impact. There's so much potential in one person and you never find out what you're capable of until you try.
What's next for Enrich your Summer, Don't be a Bummer
I plan to elevate the app by using the location of the user to find in-person programs near them.
