Inspiration
Have you ever received a panicked call from a parent or grandparent about a potential banking scam? For over 56 million seniors in the United States, this fear is a daily reality. Approximately 75% of older adults have been exposed to fraud attempts, with victims reporting losses of up to $7,700 annually.
This creates a deeper psychological issue: seniors isolate themselves from the financial system and refuse to use banking apps out of fear. However, when families try to help, they often resort to traditional joint accounts or invasive power-of-attorney setups, stripping the senior of their independence. We were inspired to solve this friction. ENO Family was born from a simple truth: We don't want to control our parents' finances; we just want to back them up.
What it does
ENO Family is an integrated financial co-piloting module within the existing Capital One ecosystem. It does not remove the user's autonomy; instead, it adds an optional layer of family consent and visibility.
Shared Visibility: Co-pilots (trusted family members) can view a clean, anonymized dashboard of recurring charges (e.g., forgotten cable subscriptions) to prevent capital leaks.
Delegated Virtual Cards: Seniors can generate virtual cards via Eno's chat with strict spending limits for daily errands, requiring explicit approval from the primary user.
Smart Alerts: Instead of giving children full access to bank statements, ENO Family acts as a radar, alerting the co-pilot only when anomalous or high-risk transactions occur.
How we built it
We architected ENO Family to be highly feasible, secure, and ready for deployment within the Capital One infrastructure.
Cloud & Synchronization: The backend infrastructure is fully deployed on Vultr, ensuring low latency and high availability. We utilized the Nessie API to handle real-time state synchronization between the senior's device and the co-pilot's device.
Algorithmic Logic: We leveraged Eno's analytical engine to detect statistical anomalies in spending patterns.
Security & Compliance: We implemented Financial API Keys with bank-grade encryption. To ensure legal validity and data minimization, we integrated NIP-based digital signatures compliant with E-SIGN Act standards, ensuring the senior retains absolute control over who accesses their data.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest hurdle was the UX/UI and system design balance: how do we create a security tool that doesn't feel like a parental control app? Technically, establishing a real-time, bi-directional handshake using the Nessie API while maintaining strict data minimization required rigorous testing. We had to ensure the co-pilot received enough data to be helpful, but not enough to compromise the primary user's privacy.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are incredibly proud of building a non-trivial solution. Instead of settling for a basic joint account dashboard, we engineered a scalable, intergenerational wealth-retention tool. We successfully merged a highly emotional, human-centric problem with a robust technical stack (Vultr + Nessie) in under 36 hours.
What we learned
We learned that designing for older adults goes far beyond making buttons larger; it requires deep empathy and respect for their dignity and independence. On the technical side, we deepened our understanding of cloud deployment on Vultr and the intricacies of securely bridging accounts using the Nessie API.
What's next for ENO Family
The fear of fraud knows no borders, making our TAM massive. Our immediate Go-to-Market strategy relies on Capital One’s existing strengths:
In-App Loops: 1-click push notifications for getting to know the model.
Phygital Strategy: Hosting weekend digital literacy workshops at Capital One Cafés for dual-generation onboarding.
Strategic Partnerships: Collaborating with organizations like AARP to position Capital One as the leader in intergenerational financial security.
