Inspiration
In High School, I was the president of the English language learners Club. I noticed a lot of students lacked the motivation to study, had extremely low graduation rates and high dropout rates and they even lacked the motivation to study. This tore me apart. As President I knew that I had to do something to solve this issue. That’s when in summer I joined the STEM program in CCNY and I decided to make the ENGUA APP to solve the problems of the ELL students.
What it does
ENGUA APP is no ordinary app. It’s an app that consists of interactive educational tools and resources built specifically for the needs of ELL students. Our app consists of the following features: •Specialized help in entrance exams like SAT and ACT exams • Match ELL students to guidance counselors who speak their own native language •Native Accent Translation- cool feature that converts the English voice to their own native accent voice •Incentives like awards and certificates for every module that they complete on our app
How we built it
We are using two programming languages to build it- objective C and swift We are in the process of building the app I am currently taking android and app development courses to gain skills in this aspect and through the help of my software developer internship like Code Path, I can make this app a reality very soon.
Challenges we ran into
I took the initiative to interview a group of ELL students in my high school and finding the core solution to their problems was a lit bit of a challenge We also have competitors like Duolingo and GOOGLE Translate, so we had to come up with an innovative solution that sets ENGUA APP apart from the others.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Recently we were shortlisted in the Blackstone Launchpad CSI Dolphin Tank Competition and we were so honored to have won the competition. Hopefully with the funding we get from the competition we can invest in taking our app further.
What we learned
Building a company based on people’a real life problems is always an idea that stays in the market and thrives in the future.
What's next for ENGUA APP 2.0
We are aiming to have more than 200 language translations in the near future Aiming to reach out to as many ELL students all over the World Become the most downloaded and used app of all time!!!
