Inspiration

The rise of multi-agent AI unlocks massive productivity—but creates a critical accountability gap. When many agents work in parallel, decisions drift, contradictions slip through, and teams lose visibility into what’s happening—introducing real liability risk.

We drew inspiration from finance: accounting didn’t just track money; it enabled safe scaling through control and accountability. Engram plays that same role for AI—providing a verifiable memory layer that lets organizations audit actions, maintain control, and prevent silent failures.

What it does

Engram Memory is an open-source shared memory and consistency platform for multi-agent AI teams. It automatically records every user instruction and agent input as verifiable facts in a persistent database, ensuring all agents operate from a single source of truth.

Core features:

Automatic fact commitment with seamless IDE integration (Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code + Copilot, Zed) via MCP Proactive conflict detection that checks every new fact against history and surfaces contradictions before they become bugs Audit-ready shared context for full visibility into agent behavior Privacy-first, self-hosted architecture (Postgres, encryption, per-workspace isolation, no training usage)

Engram turns chaotic agent workflows into reliable, auditable systems—bringing accountability to the AI agent economy.

How we built it

Engram is a Python-based MCP server backed by Postgres, inspired by treating multi-agent memory as a systems architecture problem.

Key components:

Bitemporal modeling to track when facts are valid Zettelkasten-style enrichment for structured knowledge linking Real-time conflict detection across the full historical timeline Auto-commit hooks and CLI tools for frictionless adoption

The result is a working system where conflicting agent instructions are detected and resolved before inconsistent code is written.

Challenges we ran into

Balancing real-time performance with deep, full-history conflict detection Designing integrations that feel native while preserving user control Evolving from conflict detection to a full governance and liability layer Maintaining privacy-first, self-hosted design at scale

What's next for Engram Memory

Short-term: expand IDE/agent integrations, optimize performance, improve import pipelines

Long-term:
