Inspiration
I am an mechanical engineering student, and I have been continuously searching for jobs for the past five months.
During that process, I kept running into the same problems: job information was scattered across different platforms, many job descriptions were difficult to interpret, I was not always sure which skills I was missing, and career planning often felt disconnected from real market data.
At first, I simply wanted to write some code to help solve these problems for myself.
But as I talked with classmates and other engineering students around me, I realized that many of them were struggling with exactly the same issues. That was when the idea grew from a personal tool into something much bigger.
I decided to turn it into an app.
That app became Engineer Scope.
What it does
Engineer Scope is an AI-powered career intelligence platform built specifically for engineers.
The app analyzes real engineering job-market data together with each user’s resume, background, skills, and career preferences. It helps users understand where they currently stand, what they should improve, and which opportunities are worth prioritizing.
Key features include:
- Engineering-focused job discovery
- Job-fit analysis
- AI-powered job deep dives
- Skill-gap analysis
- Resume analysis
- Company and market intelligence
- Application tracking
- Personalized career planning
- AI Career Coach guidance
- Scopey, an AI Career Copilot that provides contextual support across the app
The goal is not just to help users find more jobs. It is to help them make better career decisions by connecting personal career context with real market demand.
How we built it
We built Engineer Scope as a full-stack mobile product rather than a simple AI demo.
The mobile app is built with React Native and Expo.
The backend uses FastAPI and PostgreSQL/Supabase for authentication, user profiles, application data, career data, and production services.
We also built data pipelines for collecting, normalizing, and serving engineering job and company information. These data are used together with user profiles to support job-fit analysis, skill-gap analysis, market intelligence, and AI-powered career guidance.
RevenueCat is integrated for subscription and entitlement management, supporting monthly and annual Premium plans.
Our AI features are designed to use structured career context rather than operate as a generic chatbot. The system combines job requirements, user background, market data, skill information, and career goals to produce more relevant guidance.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was turning Engineer Scope from a working project into a production-ready app. Publishing took us nearly a month because we had to repeatedly test builds, respond to App Store and Google Play review requirements, configure subscriptions, fix production issues, and validate the app on real devices.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that Engineer Scope grew from a personal idea into a real product. We built a full-stack app, tested it with real engineering students, integrated subscriptions, deployed the production backend, and completed the Google Play closed test.
Most importantly, we built something that solves a real problem we experienced ourselves.
What we learned
We learned that shipping a real product involves much more than building features. It requires reliable infrastructure, testing, payments, privacy, platform compliance, and continuous user feedback. We also learned that AI is much more useful when it is grounded in real job-market data and each user’s actual career background.
What's next for Engineer Scope
Our next priority is to improve the product based on real user behavior after launch.
We plan to add better experience-level filtering, improve job-data loading performance, expand market intelligence, strengthen personalized career planning, and continue improving Scopey’s ability to understand each user’s career context.
Long term, we want Engineer Scope to become more than a job-search app.
Our goal is to build a career intelligence platform that can support engineers throughout their professional journey — helping them understand the market, develop the right skills, evaluate opportunities, and make better long-term career decisions.
