In many rural communities across Nigeria and beyond, access to quality education remains a huge challenge due to language barriers and limited internet connectivity. Most educational platforms are built in English and require stable internet access — a luxury many can’t afford. We were inspired to bridge this gap by building EngausaEdu — a platform that empowers learners to access quality education in their preferred local dialect using AI, with or without internet access.
What it does EngausaEdu is an AI-powered educational platform that delivers learning content in local Nigerian dialects such as Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, and others. It works offline, enabling students in rural areas to learn without relying on internet connectivity. Through speech and text interfaces, users can interact with the platform, ask questions, and receive explanations in their native language. The app covers subjects like Mathematics, English, Basic Science, and Civic Education, all tailored to align with the national curriculum.
How we built it We used:
AI models for natural language processing to translate and interpret learning content into local dialects.
Text-to-speech and speech-to-text engines for interactive learning experiences in native tongues.
A progressive web app (PWA) architecture to ensure the platform can function offline after initial installation.
Local storage and caching techniques to enable learning without internet access.
A Node.js + Express backend and lightweight frontend built with React and Tailwind CSS.
We also collaborated with native speakers and educators to train and fine-tune the translations and voice output for accuracy.
Challenges we ran into Finding accurate AI language models for underrepresented dialects was a major hurdle.
Ensuring the platform works effectively offline across different devices and environments.
Creating educational content that balances cultural relevance with academic rigor.
Testing with real users in rural areas with limited digital literacy and feedback mechanisms.
Accomplishments that we're proud of Successfully created an offline-first educational platform tailored to local dialects.
Enabled students to interact with AI in their mother tongue for the first time.
Built a scalable solution that can be adapted for other regions and languages.
Positive feedback from students and teachers in our pilot testing communities.
What we learned Technology must meet people where they are — language and connectivity are not just technical challenges but human ones.
AI can be made inclusive when combined with cultural insight and local collaboration.
Offline solutions are crucial in ensuring digital equity in education.
What's next for EngausaEdu Expand support to more local dialects and educational levels.
Partner with local schools, NGOs, and government to scale outreach and deployment.
Integrate voice-based AI tutors and gamified learning modules for improved engagement.
Launch a hardware version — affordable learning tablets preloaded with EngausaEdu for rural classrooms.
