Inspiration

Energy powers modern life, but rising demand in India challenges traditional systems, causing blackouts, wastage, and inefficiencies. Even minor fluctuations from festivals, weather, or industry can create imbalances. To address this, I built EnergyLoad AI, a platform that forecasts energy demand and detects anomalies before they become costly.

What it does

EnergyLoad AI is an AI-powered forecasting and monitoring system that forecasts energy demand, detects anomalies, and provides interactive dashboards for decision-makers. It helps utilities plan better, reduce blackouts, optimize costs, and integrate renewable sources while giving industries and consumers actionable insights. Imagine a city knowing in advance that energy demand will peak next Monday evening due to weather and events, that’s the power of EnergyLoad AI.

How I built it

I divided my solution into three main stages:

  1. Data Collection & Preprocessing

    • Collected historical energy consumption data.
    • Integrated weather information (temperature, humidity, rainfall).
    • Added calendar features like holidays, weekends, and festivals.
    • Cleaned missing values, handled outliers, and normalized time-series data.
  2. Modeling & Forecasting

    • Started with baseline models (ARIMA, Holt-Winters) to capture seasonality and trend.
    • Advanced to deep learning models (LSTMs, GRUs) to learn long-term dependencies in energy usage.
    • Used ensemble methods to combine the strengths of classical and deep learning models.
  3. Anomaly Detection

    • Applied Isolation Forest and Statistical Thresholding to detect unusual spikes or drops.
    • Cross-verified anomalies with weather/events to reduce false positives.
  4. Evaluation

    • Accuracy measured with:
      • Root Mean Square Error
      • Mean Absolute Percentage Error
  5. Deployment

    • Built a Flask backend serving model predictions.
    • Designed dashboards with Plotly/Dash for real-time visualization.
    • Deployed locally for demo, with future potential to scale on cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP).

Challenges I ran into

  • Handling seasonality (summer AC loads, winter heating demands) while keeping forecasts accurate.
  • Data availability as merging government datasets, weather data, and real-time streams was complex.
  • Balancing between simple models (fast but less accurate) and deep models (accurate but resource-heavy).
  • Designing a system that works for both rural villages and large metro cities with different consumption patterns.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

  • Achieved low error margins (MAPE under 10%) in test cases.
  • Created visual dashboards that make predictions intuitive for non-technical users.
  • Built a solution that directly addresses India’s energy challenges and can scale globally.
  • Learned how to integrate data science, machine learning, and real-world energy problems into one project.

What I learned

  • Time-series forecasting is not “one-size-fits-all” and combining classical and deep models works best.
  • External features like weather, holidays, and events play a huge role in accuracy.
  • Data cleaning and preprocessing can take more time than building the actual model, but it is absolutely critical.
  • Deploying ML models is as important as training them, and building dashboards added immense value.

What's next for EnergyLoad AI: Smart Forecasting & Anomaly Detection

  • Integrating renewable energy (solar/wind) forecasting into the pipeline.
  • Building region-specific models that adapt to local consumption habits.
  • Developing a mobile app for households and industries to get personalized insights and energy-saving tips.
  • Expanding anomaly detection to predict grid failures and prevent outages proactively.
