Inspiration
Homeowners today often lack visibility into their daily and monthly energy consumption, making it difficult to identify patterns, set goals and reduce usage. Existing solutions are either too technical, spread across multiple apps, or are simply informational lacking actionable items. All of this can lead to high cognitive load and low engagement with no actions. This project was highly inspired by sustainability and the individual actions one can do to contribute to fighting Climate Change.
What it does
This solution would be to develop a human-centered energy dashboard integrated with Google Home and Nest devices. The dashboard will be paired with a predictive AI model that will offer smart suggestions that user can take to lower energy consumption. This dashboard also contains financial information, typing to the electricity bill. The design should be scalable so in the future a level of autonomy can be added where the predicative model can take the actions for the user. An example, would be Google Nest automatically pre-cooling the home based on outside temperature, knowing that is the most energy efficient approach.
How we would build it
A) Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
- Cloud Funcitons: backend logic for data processing
- Firebase: real-time database, authentication and hosting
- BigQuery: advanced analytics for usage trends and predictions
B) Google Home and Nest Integration
-Google Home SDK: enable voice commands like "Hey google, what can I do to lower my energy consumption by 10%"
-Google Nest APIs: pull device-specific data (ex. thermostat usage)
C) Vertex AI: train, deploy, and serve a machine learning model
Google Charts - interactive charts that show usage data (maybe provide suggestions on ways to improve) Cloud IoT - need secure connection to smart meters and IoT devices
We can take the BigQuery data and train the model, deploying it utilizing Vertex AI and finally Firebase to push the predictions and recommendations to the dashboard.
