Inspiration
Over 1.9 million individuals use prosthetics worldwide, and this figure is expected to rise annually. However, with that, more than 300,000 prosthetic limbs are discarded annually. In addition, the cost of these pricy prosthetic limbs is beyond the means of many minority groups. Those who can afford them dispose of the prosthetics once they are no longer needed, generating a great deal of garbage.
What it does
By making this app, those with prosthetic limbs that are ready to be discarded can give them to healthcare facilities, where they can be modified and given to those in need. Both donors and receivers may use this software to search for and donate limbs. This focuses on the problem of people who cannot buy prosthetic limbs and the waste of these limbs.
How we built it
I built a demo template on Canva to see what functions this app would have. Later, I started building the app using Java. I am currently testing the app on a terminal and will work with the graphics using GUI and Swing. However, it is not complete yet.
Challenges we ran into
You are not legally allowed to donate legs, however, you can give them to healthcare faculties to reuse. I am not fully equipped to make the chat portion of this app where the recipients/donors can contact the facilities. Another challenge for the long-term use of this app is the cost of delivering these limbs to the recipient.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am proud that I was able to gain insights into this issue and create an app that could potentially help resolve this issue.
