All of us enjoy hiking and going mountain biking on our weekends, so we have a natural love of the wilderness. We frequently spot hawks, snakes, deer, and once, when we got lucky, a mountain lion. These animals are easily the most exciting things we see on our journeys and served as our inspiration for saving endangered species.
What it does
This platform allows users to explore a variety of "rooms." Rooms are dedicated to animals, and in them, there is a chat where people can partake in a live discussion about the state of the animal. People can post about the animal using images and text. People can also pledge money to the animal.
How we built it
We recently learned Spring, so we divided and conquered. One of us developed the authentication system and live chat, one of us worked on the room system, and one of us worked on creating posts. Towards the end, we all merged our work.
Challenges we ran into
One of our members left, so the remaining two of us had to make up for his work. We had to figure out how his code worked and resolved all of the conflicts he left in his wake (he was using different versions for some technologies in addition to all of his unfinished work).
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of EVERYTHING. A few months ago, we barely even knew Spring. Through sheer grit and 24 hours of sleeplessness, we have managed to push on and make something better than we could've imagined all whilst losing a member.
What we learned
We learned how to work with different types of requests and more advanced HTML templating.
What's next for Endangered Species
We want to use PayPal to actually be able to send money, improve the UI A LOT, and delve deeper into the backend, creating more versatile posts, validation, creating new ways for users to interact and make a difference, and more.
