Inspiration
Remote collaboration has grown rapidly, but file sharing often breaks down over slow or unstable networks. We wanted to build something that could guarantee delivery, even when connections fail — a truly end-to-end solution combining security, scalability, and speed.
What it does
Resumable uploads & downloads: Automatically recover from network interruptions. End-to-end encryption: Secure sharing through encrypted links. S3 & CDN integration: Store and deliver files globally at high speed. Real-time progress tracking: Live updates on upload and transfer status. Custom access controls: Manage permissions and share securely within teams.
How we built it
We used a React.js + Next.js frontend with Tailwind CSS for a responsive UI and Axios for handling resumable HTTP requests. The backend, built with Java and an embedded server, manages uploads, encryption, and metadata handling. Docker was used for containerization, AWS S3 for scalable storage, Nginx for reverse proxying and HTTPS termination, and Maven for build automation. We also implemented custom handlers for chunk management and retry logic to ensure upload reliability.
Challenges we ran into
Managing upload resumption and maintaining file integrity across unstable connections. Efficiently encrypting files on the fly without adding major latency. Coordinating between frontend progress updates and backend state tracking. Handling CORS and HTTPS configurations across Docker and Nginx layers.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Achieved zero data loss in multiple network drop simulations. Integrated a fully functional resumable upload system with progress visualization. Built a secure and scalable architecture deployable via Docker and AWS. Delivered a smooth user experience with real-time feedback and elegant design.
What we learned
Deepened our understanding of network reliability, multipart uploads, and S3 APIs. Learned how to fine-tune Nginx + HTTPS for optimal performance. Discovered how critical frontend feedback loops are to user trust during long transfers. Gained experience in containerized deployments for distributed environments.
What's next for End To End File Share
Add team collaboration tools like shared folders and chat integration. Implement desktop and mobile clients for offline sync. Explore AI-based transfer optimization (e.g., predicting network reliability). Expand to multi-region redundancy and enterprise authentication (SSO, OAuth).
