Inspiration
This app was inspired by Omeagle which was recently shut down due to legal and ethical concerns. EncounterMe tries to tackle these aspects by introducing new features to ensure user safety. Unlike other popular social media platforms, this app is meant for users to actively participate in a social setting instead of passively consuming content that other users post.
What it does
This app connects users based on similar interests of various users. There is also other metrics such as the public perception score and the profanity rating that is displayed to the user before they get in a video call with other users. The public perception score is determined by the review of other users after an encounter. The profanity rating is automatically generated by an A.I. that detects profanity through the transcripts of the video calls. These metrics are supposed to aid the user to make better decisions on who they chat with. In the actual app, there would be algorithms to try to match people with similar scores and ratings, so people interact with those who are similar to them (If a user is frequently meeting other users with lower public perception scores, it's an indicator for them to possibly reflect on their behavior). These metrics also determine how much currency a user gets on a weekly basis that they can use in the shop. The currency is specifically earned on a weekly basis to prevent users from identifying who gave them positive or negative reviews. It also deters people from fixating on gaining these points because they are only meant to be a reward system to induce positive behavior and a safe environment.
How we built it
I used Figma to build the prototype.
Challenges we ran into
This was my first time using Figma, so I had to learn various things. There were also some aspects of the app that I could not visually represent in the prototype such as the real-time video call and the A.I. associated with it. In the actual functionality of the app, there should be an A.I. that automatically detects and ends a video call once certain words or phrases that are unanimously perceived as derogatory or inappropriate. There should also be an A.I. that detects for a face on the screen and blurs everything else automatically (screen would be a complete blur if no face was shown); this is the method to reduce inappropriate behavior that is often common in these video chatting platforms.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I think the prototype was clean and the premise of the app was clear.
What we learned
I learned how to utilize Figma to create a prototype for a potential app.
What's next for EncounterMe
Various features can be added such as a specific tutoring or counseling section where verified users can volunteer to help others in need (promote a healthy community)
