Inspiration
As the COVID-19 pandemic spreads globally, we are becoming more aware of the impact social distancing and self-isolation can have on limiting the spread of the disease and flattening the curve. Unfortunately, due to the speed with which the coronavirus is spreading it is very hard to keep track of the progression of the disease - individually and collectively.
What it does
Our project enables people to keep track of virus-related symptoms and mark if they have tested positive for the disease. Users are then able to see if they have come into contact with others who have contracted the disease and when. All data is anonymized and strict privacy controls are in place. In this way, we aim to help individuals get a better understanding of how the disease is spreading in their country and alert healthcare systems to potential chains of contagion.
How I built it
We use Google Nearby API to detect surrounding devices whom are using the Encounter app. The app is offline-first, allowing the user to still use the app without internet connection.
Challenges I ran into
Cross-platform support and offline functionality.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
It works!
What I learned
That the best way to inform about Covid-19 is to show progress in beating it.
What's next for Encounter
We want to make it available to every country and language available.
