Inspiration
I have a relative who is an extremely enthusiastic and happy person who was born with a rare genetic condition that left her paralyzed from the waist down. She is extremely fond of beauty and applying makeup but always needed some sort of assistance because the traditional beauty standards and mainstream society often ignored her and her needs. She struggled with everyday tasks that most of us take for granted. We want to share her story with the world, to celebrate her spirit as an effort to make the beauty industry more inclusive and portray her as Tara in the entire presentation.
What it does
empowwr celebrates diversity and inclusivity! Our universal website offers tailored assistance and services to people like Tara, so they can feel included and empowered. Through our website, Tara and people like her will be able to access a range of beauty services that will cater to their unique needs. From customized beauty products and nails to accessible at-home beauty services we've got it all.
How we built it
We carried out extensive user-research and read numerous articles on how differently-abled individuals find trouble in accessing beauty. We defined a concise problem statement, jotted down our target audience and their pain-points along with the task analysis and affinity mapping to resolve the problems they face. Our UI/UX designer designed the wireframes of our website keeping in mind the visual needs and unique needs of differently abled individuals while making the website visually appealing.
Challenges we ran into
The most challenging part for us was designing the website in a universal way, we didn't want to focus on any particular group of individuals having a particular syndrome or abilities, we wanted to make the design extremely inclusive for people of all backgrounds and abilities. To do the same we had to create multiple wireframes and test which one works the best and has the most universal design.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating a design that provides a fully universal beauty platform that caters to a wide majority of people and promotes inclusivity because nobody should feel left out or different.
What we learned
We learned the difficulties and hardships differently abled people go through in their every day life and we also learned the difference between an accessible and universal design and the kind of audience each of them serves to.
What's next for empowwr
We aim to broaden our community and make our platform even more inclusive by creating our own line of sustainable beauty products tailored for a wide audience and people of different abilities and backgrounds like accessible and voice command enabled chairs, applicators, etc.
