EmpowHer: Adventure Game - Project Story
Inspiration
EmpowHer was born from a desire to challenge stereotypes and empower young girls to pursue STEM and AI careers. We were inspired by eye-opening statistics showing that many young women lose interest in STEM due to self-doubt and societal biases. This project is our creative response to those challenges—a way to turn obstacles into empowering opportunities.
What it does
EmpowHer is an interactive mini-game that takes players through a series of interconnected rooms. Each room represents a stage in a girl's journey toward a future in AI:
- Obstacles symbolize real-life biases and stereotypes.
- Pickups and Power-ups provide inspiration and support, reflecting the positive influence of role models in AI.
- Hints and Descriptions guide the player through the narrative, offering both gameplay tips and motivational messages.
How we built it
- Design & Planning:
We began by brainstorming ideas, creating storyboards, and developing a project presentation to map out the gameplay, narrative, and symbolism behind each room. - Development:
Using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, we built the game on CodePen. We implemented room transitions, collision detection, enemy AI, and interactive pickups to create a dynamic and engaging experience. - Visual Integration:
Custom graphics were sourced and integrated for characters, enemies, pickups, and backgrounds. We ensured that each room carried its unique theme with appropriate hints and descriptions. - Iterative Refinement:
Through continuous testing and feedback, we refined gameplay mechanics, adjusted enemy speeds, and enhanced the visual layout (such as moving the hint panel upward to avoid blocking doorways).
Challenges we ran into
- Balancing Gameplay with Message:
Creating a game that is both engaging and educational proved challenging. We had to ensure that the symbolic obstacles were not so hard that they discouraged players, yet impactful enough to convey the intended message. - Technical Hurdles:
Implementing smooth room transitions, precise collision detection, and consistent enemy AI behavior required multiple iterations and debugging. - Visual Clarity:
Ensuring that textual hints and room descriptions were legible against various backgrounds was difficult. We experimented with different positioning and semi-transparent backgrounds for text overlays. - Team Coordination:
Collaborating effectively across different aspects of the project—from game design and coding to graphic integration—presented its own set of challenges, which ultimately helped us grow as a team.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Empowering Narrative:
We successfully transformed a technical mini-game into an empowering narrative that challenges stereotypes and inspires confidence. - Seamless Integration:
The game integrates custom graphics, sound effects, and interactive elements to create a cohesive experience. - Responsive Gameplay:
We achieved smooth transitions between rooms, intuitive controls, and meaningful interactions that keep the player engaged throughout the journey. - Positive Impact:
The project has the potential to spark early interest in AI and STEM among young girls, promoting diversity and inclusion in these fields.
What we learned
- Technical Skills:
Our understanding of JavaScript, game loops, collision detection, and dynamic asset integration improved significantly. - Design Thinking:
We learned how to translate abstract ideas about empowerment and diversity into concrete game mechanics and visuals. - Collaboration:
Working in a team, we honed our skills in communication, project management, and iterative design. - User Experience:
The importance of clarity in both visual design and gameplay was reinforced, as we worked to ensure that hints, descriptions, and interactions were easily understood.
What's next for EmpowHer: Adventure Game
- Expand the Game World:
We plan to add more rooms and levels, each with deeper narratives and challenges. - Enhanced AI Personalization:
Future updates will include adaptive AI that personalizes challenges based on player behavior. - Community Engagement:
We aim to build a community around the game, where players can share their experiences and empower one another. - Broadening Impact:
Our long-term goal is to integrate EmpowHer into educational programs to inspire more young girls to pursue STEM careers and build confidence from an early age.
