Inspiration

  • EmpowerWork was inspired by the real-world challenges faced by Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).
  • A key inspiration came from our team member Pranam Srivastava, a visually impaired AI/ML developer with over 100 certifications and experience at Infosys.
  • Pranam’s struggle to access inclusive employment opportunities highlighted the urgent need for an accessible and empowering platform.
  • This led us to build a solution designed to make career enablement inclusive, accessible, and impactful.

What it does

  • EmpowerWork is an AI-driven inclusive career enablement platform for individuals with disabilities.
  • Offers personalized learning in audio, video, and text formats.
  • Features a multilingual voice-enabled chatbot for career guidance.
  • Includes accessible job boards with filters for accommodations.
  • Provides resume parsing and job matching using AI.
  • Offers gamified learning, certifications, dashboards, and employer portals.
  • Built with accessibility at its core to ensure equal opportunity.

How we built it

  • Frontend developed using React.js, Next.js, Tailwind CSS, ShadCN/UI, and Lucide Icons.
  • Backend built with Node.js and Express.js.
  • AI integration using Google Gemini API for content generation and chatbot.
  • Resume analysis and job matching powered by OpenAI.
  • Data and semantic storage managed with Firebase and ChromaDB.
  • Media storage through Google Cloud Storage.
  • Accessibility features include Text-to-Speech, Speech-to-Text, AI Resume Parsing, and WCAG compliance.

Challenges we ran into

  • Designing an accessible interface for users with visual and auditory impairments.
  • Implementing real-time multilingual voice support.
  • Creating a resume parsing system that accounts for employment gaps due to disabilities.
  • Balancing gamification features with accessibility standards.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully transformed a real-life problem into a working MVP.
  • Seamless integration of AI and accessibility into a user-friendly experience.
  • Built a platform where users can find jobs, upskill, and receive tailored guidance.
  • Made inclusivity a practical reality through tech-driven solutions.

What we learned

  • Gained deep insights into building inclusive digital platforms.
  • Learned practical application of WCAG standards and screen-reader compatibility.
  • Improved understanding of AI integration and voice technology.
  • Realized the importance of empathy-driven development when creating for underrepresented communities.

What's next for EmpowerWork

  • Develop a mobile app to enhance accessibility and reach.
  • Collaborate with NGOs, inclusive employers, and government schemes.
  • Expand job listings and integrate with platforms like LinkedIn.
  • Launch a community portal for mentorship and peer support.
  • Continue evolving EmpowerWork as a movement to promote inclusive employment opportunities.
