Inspiration
Survivors of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Cyberbullying often face significant barriers to accessing justice, including a lack of legal knowledge, limited financial resources, and fear of retribution. These barriers are particularly pronounced in rural or underserved areas. Inspired by the need to provide a safe, supportive, and accessible space for survivors, we created EmpowerVoice chat.
What it does
It is a confidential chatbot designed to offer support and guidance to individuals experiencing or recognizing early signs of GBV. It provides a secure platform for users to share their experiences, access information about their legal rights, and connect with local support services. The chatbot also offers emotional support and resources to help users cope with stress and trauma.
How we built it
I built it using Visual Studio Code, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the frontend, ensuring an intuitive and user-friendly interface
Challenges we ran into
One of the significant challenges I faced was limited experience with backend development. Learning new technologies and languages like SQL, API intergration and Node.js was a steep learning curve, but it was essential for creating a secure and reliable backend for the chatbot. Additionally, ensuring the confidentiality and security of user data was a critical concern, requiring us to implement robust privacy measures.
Accomplishments that I am proud of:
I am proud to have created a platform that provides a lifeline for individuals experiencing GBV. This is my the first project I have created and try my best to finish it, even though i had to learn from the start.
What I learned
Through this project, I learned the importance of empathy and understanding when designing solutions for sensitive issues like GBV. I gained valuable skills in backend development and data security, as well as insights into the challenges faced by survivors of GBV.
What's next for EmpowerVoice
Next, we plan to enhance EmpowerVoice by incorporating more languages, integrating voice recognition technology and expanding its resources to cover a wider range of issues related to GBV, and also have a WhatsApp bot for it. We aim to partner with more local organizations and support services to provide users with comprehensive assistance. Additionally, we plan to develop mobile app versions to increase accessibility and reach more individuals in need
