Inspiration

We were inspired by seeing other women speak up. With the growth of the internet, women's voices have been projected, through social media, panels moving online, and the ever growing interest we invest in the lives of others. Despite all this, women's voices are still often drowned out in the sea of voices and invalidated by men. We wanted a place that highlighted women, and pushed their stories to center stage.

What it does

Our platform allows women to share their stories anonymously, or attached to a username. Stories have general categories in order for women to find others with similar stories they can connect with, and highlight the inter-sectional issues that come with being a woman in such a diverse world.

How we built it

We used rep-lit and started by building a very basic frame work for the home page and a page of stories. The page of stories was copied and pasted according to the categories. We added in titles and descriptions, as well as the start to some mock stories in order to give an example of how it would look. The site was polished and cleaned up, reformatting the table of contents as a drop down menu, the adding of images, reformatting colors, and adding a chat section.

Challenges we ran into

The time zones were difficult. Getting on calls didn't always work for everyone. We've also had issues with life just chucking random monkey wrenches at us like power outages. There was of course the difficulty of coding, but having an extra pair of eyes really helped.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

It got done and it looks awesome. For a lot of us this was nerve wracking but after the initial "hey what's going on?" and organization everything fell into place smoothly.

What we learned

Clear organization is key. After getting everyone on a group chat things kind of fell into a rhythm. We agreed on what would be happening next and did some incremental check-ins. It was also great for when there was a problem, and it was easy to get a hold of whoever we needed to talk to, or just see if anyone was available.

What's next for Empowering Women Through Listening

We hope to have a more efficient way to submit stories emailing in order to get more people writing as well as adding more catagoires of story.
